29 Spa, Atlanta: A Peachy Spa Day in Shoulder Pads

Georgia is confused.

In Atlanta alone, there are 71 streets named Peachtree. Yes, it’s called “The Peach State,” but Georgia is only around the 4th biggest producer of peaches nationwide. California is by far #1. And to make matters worse, “Peachtree” is merely a misinterpreted version of “Pitch tree.” Pitch is sap, and in fact, there seems to be no historical peach tree that led to the original name. Sit on that one, James!

But despite these bewildering peach statistics, Atlanta seems to be doing just fine, and my visit to the renowned 29 Spa at the Mansion on Peachtree, a gorgeous 15,000 square foot recipient of Condé Nast Traveler’s 2009 50 Hot Spas, was as peachy a spa day I could have asked for.

I arrived with my friend Natasha in Buckhead, the ritzy, uptown neighborhood of Atlanta, and a fitting location for The Mansion on Peachtree. With a dramatic estate-like entrance and glossy floors that shined like a royal chess board, the hotel maintains a southern, swanky feel.

29 Spa is the vision and work of Lydia Mondavi, a spa icon and fifth generation Atlanta native who melds Napa Valley-inspired luxury and skin care with classic Americana in a blissful, decorative spa setting. She is also the creator of 29 Cosmetics, an Age Protecting skin care and makeup line utilizing the benefits of grape seeds.

Natasha and I were delighted to spend the afternoon chilling out in the jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and showers, reading fashion magazines and drinking wine (one glass is complimentary for all) in the relaxation lounge with heated neck pillows and shoulder-padded robes. Yes, shoulder pads! They’ve made a slight comeback in the past couple seasons, and 29 Spa is right on trend.

Here we are with spa buddy Ava Roxanne of My Skin Concierge, who stopped by to say hi from the Lavish Unconference that happened to be hopping upstairs at The Mansion on Peachtree. She’s recently stomped grapes there, Lucy and Ethel style, with Lydia Mondavi herself. Where was I on that day!?

The Treatments:

I received a massage called Sommelier’s Selection: Replenish and relax! This comforting, beneficial massage uses 29′s warm grape seed extract massage cream combined with gentle pressure massage to dissolve stress inviting tension to flow from the body.”

My masseur Chris delivered a wonderfully deep, penetrating massage in one of their 14 spacious treatment rooms. The description says “gentle” but I made sure there would be nothing gentle about it. I like my massages firm, so I told Chris he can go as hard as he’d like. Always be open with your therapist about the level of firmness you prefer. If it’s too hard or soft, say something.

Natasha received a body treatment called Grape Skin:Perfecting grape skin extract and red wine pumice restore the skin with powerful, anti-oxidant polyphenols. Leaving your skin feeling as velvety as a silky Reserve Cabernet.”

Natasha doesn’t go to the spa very often and had never gotten an exfoliation quite like this. She was all aflutter afterwards, having me feel her legs and arms for their velvety softness. They were indeed! She also told me it was a little cold in the room, but didn’t say anything. Therapists often ask if you’re comfortable with the temperature, but if they don’t, it’s your job to speak up! As I told Natasha, ladies and gents, if it’s too hot or cold in your treatment room, always say something.

After our treatments, we showered and used the hair dryers and products at our disposal. All fresh, glowing, relaxed and ready for a night out Atlanta! If only we knew which Peachtree street we were supposed to meet everyone…

Erik Banti: The Marc Jacobs of Maremma Wine Country

Erik Banti, a wine producer nearby my rural Tuscan spa resort, puts his name on everything. Just like Marc Jacobs. Wine bottles, barrels, souvenirs, street signs, you-name-it, and he won’t let you forget it. His product is reliable and internationally known, and he’s been featured in VOGUE. He’s intimately involved with his ad campaigns—except photographing, not modeling nude. And, as I’m told, he throws the best rooftop parties in town.

He’s one of those people whose list of accolades grows with every minute you know them. Oh, you’re also a golf champ? A well-known photographer? And you’re funny? And a Yankee fan? AND you own and operate one of the best wine businesses in one of the most fruitful wine regions on the entire planet?

That’s Erik Banti. He also told great stories too. Here’s one of my favorites… because, of course. Erik Banti is also a friend to the environment.

Wine barrels are historically round. Three hundred years ago it was the only shape that barrel makers could seal with air-tight assurance; perpendicular wood planks risked contact with oxygen. (Oxygen and impurities are the 2 enemies of good wine.) Also, barrels could roll. Did you want to be the guy stuck lifting them? Didn’t think so.

Fast forward to the modern, Medieval Palace-like wine cellars of Erik Banti.

Most of his hundreds (thousands?) of oak barrels with aging wine inside are the typical round ones, but he has one stand-out wall of square ones. Think of it as his trophy wall. They all have Erik Banti’s logo on it; he’s one of the few wine guys out there ballsy enough to break tradition. Technology has advanced; air-tight squares on wheels are no problemo.

But the reason to change them from round to square is this: after each has run its course as a wine barrel (about 5 years), he repurposes them into furniture. “I like knowing my wine barrels have a second life,” he said with his big charming toothy smile. “Most wine manufacturers are scared of change, but there’s no reason they can’t all be square now to make furniture.”

And who else makes furniture? BOOM. Well, Marc Jacobs opened up Bookmarc on Bleecker Street. Books, furniture, close enough.

Since I’m not the best person in the world to explain how wine is made, especially not after one tour with occasional language barriers, here are some photos of the wine region and Erik Banti’s factory, all taken by Erik Banti. Because any time I tried to take a picture he’d remind me: “I have better ones! I’m giving you the CD!”

Here is where the grapes go first. The object of a grape entering these masher/filters is to  capture its goodness, which is ALL in the skin. The insides are just water, so they are not important. He used his Yankee cap as a grape to demonstrate the whole thing, so I understood.

This is Erik Banti’s party space, which connects to the rooftop.

He said when I come back to the Maremma he’ll throw me a party. Marc Jacobs never said that to me… so Erik Banti, you win! Marc Jacobs also doesn’t make wine. Although he is opening a restaurant

Hakuna Ricotta

“It means no worries…” or “Senza pensieri…” as Timon and Pumbaa sing in Italian. But even Simba knew he would only be convinced when it actually happened. Now, after much anticipation for this visit and having been here two full days, I can safely assure you there are no worries here in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma at Antico Casale di Scansano. Chi vorrà vivrà… In libertà…

So… press play, and read these 16 reasons why being at Antico Casale di Scansano means “Senza pensieri,” and why you, too, would never want to leave your Hakuna Ricotta.

1. You can put on your robe and be at the spa within seconds of deciding it sounds like a good idea.

2. Your food was likely made from ingredients that you can see while eating it.

3. Cantuccini (toasty biscuits made of only sugar, eggs, almonds and butter) dipped Vinsanto (a very sweet dessert wine) are just another way of saying ciao.

4. Eating delicious pasta, then cooking the exact same thing with the chef the next day.

5. Fog doesn’t ruin the view from your veranda.

6. Religion is topped with tomato sauce.

7. It feels like family… because it IS family. The owners live the dream of giving people the Maremma experience they grew up with.

8. This is the last thing you see before walking into your room.

9. It would be unthinkable to have this meal without first having pasta.

10. The indoor pool is a great place to sit and get to know the anatomy of your feet, if you so choose.

11. You can have your bath and eat it too.

12. Massimo would love for you to join.

13. Fagottini stuffed with pear and parmesan cooked with cream and red wine is just Italian for Satchels of Heaven.

14. If you have someone in your life you’re trying to convince that celery is good, this salad with pecorino would help.

15. A bottle of local red by the toasty fireplace in the hills of the Tuscan Maremma is just as good as it sounds.

16. Sun-soaked panoramic views look even better coming straight from a facial.
