Fitness Friday: 13 Quotes to Inspire

In case you haven’t heard by now, it’s Friday the 13th. The first of 3 Friday the 13ths in 2012. The spooky part: they’re all 13 weeks apart. If the three things creepier than that freaky fact are your waistline, your blood pressure and your BMI (body mass index) — you’ve come to the right place.

Instead of today being a scary day full of black cat dodging and salt-tossing, let today be the day you turn your luck around. That’s right, I said YOU. You alone have the power to start your own get healthy journey. It starts with a pledge to yourself, and (sadly) yourself is often a very difficult person to make promises to. When you make a promise to yourself (like to quit smoking or join our Mirror, Mirror Challenge), the only one who can hold you accountable is YOU. That’s right, I said YOU (again – louder this time). Trust me, I haven’t made a resolution, a promise or even an intention to myself in a long time, for fear of not holding up to my end of the bargain. But this year, I made a promise to myself that 2012 will be different. And that’s why I’ve put together a list of 13 (lucky!) quotes to help inspire both of us to live a happier, healthier lives.  Even though no one can motivate you like YOU can motivate yourself, I hope these words help you make Friday, January 13th the beginning of your personal get healthy journey.

#1 “The perfect time to start something never arrives.”

If tomorrow is the day you are going to start your new diet or head to the gym, there’s a huge chance tomorrow will turn into the day after tomorrow… and so on. We know you have a hectic schedule and a lot going on, but there’s never going to be the perfect day to start living a healthy life, so stop waiting around for it. Why not today?

#2 “Losing weight is a mind game. Change your mind, change your body.”

The beginning of this journey can start with a war inside your head (fear, excitement, worry, motivation…) Only you can convince yourself that it is time to make a change, and only you can trick yourself into thinking that you can’t do it.

#3 “Make no change, see no change.”

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Wishing you could change your body, your health, your life, over and over won’t make your wish come true.

#4 “Stop thinking so much and just get on with it.”

After you’ve convinced yourself that today, right now, is when everything changes, don’t let the “what ifs” creep into your head. Just do it!

#4 “It took more than a day to put it on. It will take more than a day to take it off. Move.”

Get moving. Pledge to walk for 30 minutes a day. Break it up into three 10 minute walks. Walk the dog. Take the stairs. Skip the cab. Walk in place. However you do it, just move.

#5 “Eat better.”

It sounds so simple, because it is. What’s not simple is your mind’s relationship with food. A great way to examine this is to start a food journal. Write down what you eat, when you eat it and how you feel before and after eating it. I did this for a month and realized most of the time I ate junk was because I was feeling stressed or frazzled and eating allowed me to take a time-out/break and relax. Identifying your bad-eating triggers can help you change the way you think about food.

#6 “Do not reward yourself with food, you’re not a dog.”

Along the same lines as #6, food should not be a reward. A hard morning work-out does not mean pigging out at night is excusable. The same way eating healthy all week isn’t a reason to turn Sunday into a sundae.

#7 ” Drink more water”

In a bottle, in a glass, with lime juice, with fruit, hot, cold — just drink more water. And ditch soda!

#8 “Lift weights to lose weight”

Lifting weights isn’t going to give you a “man body,” trust me. Weight training with 3-12 lb weights doing 12-15 repetitions increases lean muscle mass, making it easier for your body to burn fat. Plus, weight training decreases your risk of osteoporosis.

#9 “Don’t give up what you want most for what you want now.”

Things I want right now: Chocolate truffles. A cold beer. Cheese fries. Things I want more: To be healthy. To wear a bikini on vacation. To be happy. What’s more important in the long run?

#10 “Every morning that you wake up is another chance to get it right.”

It’s okay if you mess up. It’s okay if you should have started 5 years ago instead of 5 days ago. It’s okay if you plateau or get discouraged. Never forget why you started this journey. Get a good night’s sleep and start fresh in the morning.

#11 “It never gets easier, you just get better.”

One of the most rewarding days on your journey will be the day you look back at today and say, “That used to be so hard, now it’s a piece of cake.”

#12 “Healthy is sexy.”

Being healthy will improve your relationship with yourself, cost you less money in doctor’s bills and give you more time (alive) with your loved ones.

#13 “A year from now you will wish you had started today.”

This quote is the single most powerful piece of inspiration I have personally ever laid eyes on. On January 13th, 2013, I won’t have any regrets. I promise myself.

Beverly Hills’ Top 8 Most Requested Plastic Surgeries

Lifting, contouring, slimming and rejuvenating your face and body is a medi-spa’s specialty, zapping you into shape with treatments like Zerona, Lipomassage and Microcurrent facelifts. However, when nonsurgical nip-tucks aren’t enough, spa-goers turn into patients taking their cosmetic pursuits to the next level.

Ladies and gents, I introduce to you the busiest man in Beverly Hills: Dr. Gabriel Chiu. This most-trusted, multi-talented plastic surgeon of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery does it all, breast lifts to tummy tucks to nose jobs and beyond.

When writing this article, I learned just how crazy busy dedicated this surgeon is: “Dr. Chiu is in surgery every morning at 6 am, and sees 25-40 patients until 8 pm at the office, followed by our social and philanthropic commitments in the evenings.” Wow – that’s one heck of a schedule! But after checking out all the before/after pictures in Dr. Chiu’s photo gallery, I can certainly see why he’s in such hot demand.

So, in 2011, which 8 procedures topped Dr. Chiu’s most requested list? Count them down, along with some of his impressive works of “art.”

8) Removal of Undereye Bags

For people who are tired of hearing “you look tired!” this cosmetic surgery is an increasingly popular one. It’s done to improve puffy lower eyelid “bags” and reduce wrinkling of the skin. In this procedure, excess tissue is removed or repositioned, and muscles and tendons are reinforced. New York may be the city that never sleeps, but in Beverly Hills they’re looking wide awake.

Photo: 53 year-old female wanted to correct the tired look of her eyes. Upper and lower blepharoplasty were performed and she is now much happier with her “bright-eyed” look. “After” photo was taken 13 months post-surgery.

7) Brazilian Butt Lift

For a perkier, fuller derriere, people of all ages are seeking out the Brazilian Butt Lift. In this procedure, fat is removed from selected areas of the body (bonus!) and deposited in your buttocks with hundreds of small injections. The areas around the buttocks are also lipsuctioned to make them smoother and more sensual – such as the back, abdomen and thighs, which alone gives your lower body a more attractive look.

Photo: 41 year-old female wanted a more shapely and fuller butt. Liposuction of the abdomen, hips, flanks, and posterior thighs was performed. Fat was purified and transferred to the buttocks. 4.6 liters were liposuctioned and 1.02 liters were injected. “After” photo was taken 4 weeks post-surgery.

6) Liposuction of Inner and Outer Thighs

Liposuction is currently the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in the US, and in 2011, inner and outer thighs were a hot procedure. Liposuction is an option for those who are unhappy with excess fat deposits unresponsive to diet and exercise. Localized fat deposits may be due to inherited family traits, rather than a result of the lack of weight control or exercise. Ideal liposuction patients are healthy, non-smoking adults within 30% of their ideal weight.

Photo: 29 year-old female, 5’0″ tall and 106 pounds, wanted liposculpturing of her inner thighs. She complained that it was hard for her to fit in most jeans and she didn’t like the way her thighs rubbed together. 700 cc was aspirated from her medial thighs. Post-op photos were taken one year later.

5) Make My Saggy Breasts Perky (Breast Lift)

Perk up, ladies! The Breast Lift, technically known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts by the removal of excess skin and by repositioning the nipple and remaining tissue. This procedure is intended to reverse negative effects factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity.

22 year-old female wanted perkier and more shapely breasts. An inverted “T” mastopexy was performed. “After” photo was taken 4 weeks post-surgery. Read about Breast Mastopexy (Lift).

4) Tummy Tuck

An abdominoplasty is the anchor of a Mommy Makeover. Hear that, #HotSpaMoms? The 3 components of abdominal wall deformity are: (1) loose or wrinkly skin and stretch marks, usually a result of aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss; (2) fat tissue, commonly accumulated in the lower abdomen; and (3) muscle weakness and/or separation, which can occur as a result of pregnancy. A tummy tuck procedure will remove excess fat and skin, tighten abdominal wall muscles, and eliminate stretch marks between the belly button and pubis area. If recommended by Dr. Chiu, liposuction of the flanks, hips, and/or thighs can be performed in conjunction with an abdominoplasty for an even more dramatic result.

Photo: 37 year-old female, 5’6″ tall weighing 150lbs. wanted tummy tuck and liposuction. 2.7 liters were liposuctioned, 11.5 inches of vertical skin were removed, and abdominal muscles were tightened 4 inches. “After” photo was taken 6 weeks post-surgery.

3) Bulbous Nasal Tip Correction

Correcting a prominent hump of the nose has been a standard request of rhinoplasty patients, but according to Dr. Chiu, patients have increasingly been asking for correction of a nasal tip that is too large. A bulbous tip overpowers the face from the front, side, or any angle. As a patient analyzes their nose, the desire for a tip that compliments the rest of their face and brings out the attractive features becomes just as important as reducing the hump.

Photo: 26 year-old female, 5’8″ and 115 pounds, wanted to fix her nose. She says that it is too long, too large, and wanted to get rid of the hump. She was also bothered by the cleft in the tip and says, “it looks like a butt crack”. Open rhinoplasty was performed. The dorsal hump was reduced and the radix (take-off point of the nose) was lowered. Reduction of the lower lateral cartilages and caudal septum were done to raise the bottom of her nose and decrease the tip volume. Correction of the nasal tip cleft was also performed and infracture of the lateral walls decreased the overall volume of the nose. Post-op photos were taken 5 weeks later. The patient is particularly pleased with her results!

2) Liposculpture of the Abdomen

One of the most common of all cosmetic procedures, abdominal liposuction, is a technique for recontouring the body by permanently removing fat deposits from the abdomen. The tendency to accumulate fat in the abdomen may be inherited, and this fat is often especially resistant to diet and exercise.

Many patients become discouraged at having lost unwanted pounds without seeing a flatter abdomen. The overall proportions of the body may be unbalanced, or the abdomen may simply have retained areas of fatty tissue that cause it to protrude. In these cases, liposuction can successfully trim excess fat in the midsection for a flatter abdomen and more slender, balanced shape.

Photo: 25 year-old female who wants to remove the “pooch” from her lower abdomen and get more definition. Liposculpting of the abdomen was performed with 1,250 cc aspirated. Post-op photos were taken 6 weeks later.

And Dr. Chiu’s #1 most requested plastic surgery procedure is…

1) Silicone Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation has remained one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures for decades. Since their re-introduction in 2006, silicone implants have steadily gained in popularity and have become the implant of choice for many women. In Europe, silicone implants have been almost exclusively used because they offer the patient a softer, more natural look and feel. They are less likely to show rippling than saline implants, which can be an obvious sign when wearing a bikini or sundress. With activity, saline implants behave more like water balloons while silicone implants tend to have a more natural movement.

Photo: 43 year old female, 5’1″ tall and 114 pounds, desires breast augmentation. She is currently a 32A and wants to be a C cup. 400cc moderate plus profile silicone implants were placed submuscularly through an areolar incision. Follow-up photos were taken 16 months later.

Lose Weight By Accident: Buffer Your Beverages

By Jamie Dougherty

The holidays are a fantastic time of year filled with friends, family, and the nostalgic foods that bring us together. It can also be a stressful time for the same reasons… too many friends, too much family, and most notably, too much food! By the time January rolls around we are tired, lethargic, and usually in a complete food coma. But not this year, ladies.  Enter the Jamie Living 5-Part Holiday Survival Guide! The next month and half is all about how YOU can both savor and survive the holidays while simultaneously saving your waistline.  Ah, yeah!

Step #1 – Get your water buffer on!

Simply put, being at a party means having a drink in your hand.  There is no way around it as the second you arrive the host asks, “So, what can I get you?” and you certainly don’t want to be the party-pooper who meekly says, “Oh, nothing.”  The key to losing weight by accident during the holidays (yes, it is possible) is to buffer each alcoholic drink with water.  Enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail, then have a sparkling water with lime.  (It actually looks just like a vodka tonic so no one will know the difference.)  If you get sick of that, mix it up and go for a cup of hot tea or sparkling water with a splash of cranberry.  The goal is to make you feel both included in the party without drinking too much, then eating too much and waking up the next morning feeling lousy, tired and totally guilt-ridden.

Sounds good, right?  Just FYI, each step of The Holiday Survival guide builds upon the next and the water buffer is truly the gateway to staying on track with each upcoming recommendation.  Master this one and you will be set, no joke!

In the comments let me know your tricks for not getting too tipsy during the holidays.  Come on ladies, sharing is caring! (And it feels good too.)

Jamie G. Dougherty, founder of JamieLiving.com, gives women the secrets to feel amazing in their bodies and create the balance they crave between their busy schedules and eating well. Jamie believes that though kale and brown rice are good foods to put on your plate, until we truly learn HOW to eat rather than just WHAT to eat we will continue to be carb-craving, super-frazzled, stress-out ladies. If you ever feel hungry, stuck and unsatisfied with your food be sure to visit Jamie’s website to get her FREE 5-Step Guide to Fabulous.  Seriously ladies, get ready for Jamie to rock your world!

Lose Weight by Accident With Sarah Jenks: Put the Fork Down

By Sarah Jenks

Most women can finish a meal in 7 minutes or less. Though this may seem like a talent of efficiency, it is actually the direct cause of most women’s weight gain.

When we rush through our meals, we don’t give our bodies a chance to taste, smell and enjoy our meal. And when we don’t enjoy our meal, our digestion power decreases, our metabolism lowers and we are left unsatisfied by our meal. Makes sense right?

And when we’re not satisfied, we just want to keep eating and eating.

So, I want you to start putting your fork down in between every bite. Even if you eat like crap this holiday season, gift yourself this one habit.

I promise that you will enjoy your food more, eat less, and lose weight.

Give it a shot, and I’d love to here how it’s working out for you in the comments below.
