Beauty-Boosting Natural Ingredients

What’s better than snacking on something that tastes good and makes you look good? We went on a hunt for the tastiest natural ingredients that provide amazing cosmetic benefits. Want stronger nails, longer hair and healthier skin? Just incorporate these yummy ingredients into your daily diet for an effortless beauty boost:

Nails – Blueberries

Blueberries are considered to be a superfood by many doctors, and it’s no wonder – the health benefits are endless! The delicious berry also happens to provide some amazing beauty benefits, including strengthening fingernails through the antioxidants and vitamins that it contains.

$50 for 50 Min Blueberry Lemonade Pedicure and Heel Treatment at Artesia Salon & Day Spa in CA

Hair – Eggs

Protein is one of the most critical ingredients for maintaining strong and healthy hair. Celebrity hairdresser Philip Kingsley advises consuming protein in the morning because this is the time when your hair follicles receive the least amount of energy. If you aren’t a fan of eggs, try smoked salmon. Click here for more protein-packed foods that strengthen hair.

$50 for Full Base Hair Color, Haircut and Intensive Protein Treatment at Diva Spa & Salon in NJ

Skin – Cranberries

This tart berry is rich in Vitamin C, B3 and B5 – All of which are great for the skin. Vitamin C helps build collagen, Vitamin B5 increases skins moisture, and Vitamin B3 can treat acne and possibly slow skin cancer. Pretty incredible, right!

Spa Week Story Winner #2: Po-Po Can’t Ruin My Spa Day!

Have you fallen into post-spa depression (PSD)? Spa Week Spring 2012 may be over but the memories and benefits will last a lifetime! Last week we asked you for your Spa Week stories in exchange for more spa in the form of $50 Spa & Wellness Gift Cards for five of you. Meet Winner #2, whose spa day started with sirens and ended in silence.

By Khalilah Abdulrahim

Cops tried to rain on my spa day. On my way to my Spa Week treatment I received a $90 driving ticket!

Oh the stress! Why oh why!? Good thing I was on my way to a massage.

Once I arrived at Agora Spa at the Stamford Marriott Hotel in Connecticut, all my transportation worries melted away. I was given chocolate and whisked into the locker room. I slipped into my robe and then waited in the relaxation area. The atmosphere was calming and soothed my mind and body immediately. My $50 treatment of choice was the 50 minute Agora Signature Massage sent me into a state of bliss; this was just what I needed.

The best way to truly enjoy your spa day? Make it last as long as possible. So after my massage I made a bee-line back to the relaxation room and spent over an HOUR there! I indulged in my afternoon by sipping chilled cucumber water and doing nothing but relaxing. I also had a cup of tea with honey! My experience at the spa was nothing short of heavenly.

I left refreshed and recharged.

I stayed this way by not getting a ticket on the way home.

New Beauty Weapon: Eyelash Perm

Kim Kardashian may not be the world’s most desirable human being right now, but there’s one thing we can’t deny her. Okay, fine, two. One: her phenomenal derriere. Two: her ridiculously amazing lashes.

Now, I’ve gotten eyelash extensions before, and those are okay. Half of the girls in the office swear by them. But personally I didn’t love them because you can’t use mascara (I still feel like I need it), and because they didn’t feel natural to me. But what’s even better than lash length to make your eyes pop? Lash CURL.

I showed you parts of this treatment in the Wellness Gone Wild video, now watch the full lash perm in action. It’s an hour long professional process that uses a series of serums (potions!) to curls and set your lashes, and it lasts up to 3 months. Ditch your lash curler for good, and wake up flirty always. “The flirt without the work!” as Carol Swanson C. put it on Facebook. It’s been five weeks so far and they’re still just as curly as they were day one. Proof is at the bottom of this post.

See how it all works here:

Skintology Skin and Laser Center, a brand new spa in Chelsea, NYC, specializing in medical skin resurfacing, laser hair and tattoo removal, all-organic facials, SmartLipo and eyelashes is offering an Eyelash Perm on their Spa Week menu, so I had to investigate.

The spa: A bright reception area with a waterfall opened up into a much bigger spa than it seems from the outside. Hallways upon hallways of treatment rooms lined the spa, and each room had its own quirky/kitschy personality. My room was a tropical paradise. There was an aquarium nearby. A pond-like ambiance set the mood next door.

The video above explains it all, and here’s some more live action from Instagram.

Here I am, right after the appointment:

And here’s me this morning with mascara, but I haven’t touched a curler!
Hair perms are better left in the nineties, but lash perms for LIFE.

Mari Winsor’s Early Bird Challenge: Completed!

Oh mornings, how I loathe thee. Let me count the ways. One: you always creep in through my bedroom windows ten-ish minutes before my alarm goes off, so I am stuck under the covers, dreading the alarm in a don’t-wanna-get-up-yet-limbo. Two: you wake me up on the weekends (my only days to sleep in) at the same ungodly time I normally have to wake up for work during the week. Three: you come around, pulling on my heartstrings, with promises of pancakes and coffee, and try to fool me into feeling like I am missing out on the day when I wake up way past noon. I am the queen of the snooze button and no one can tell me otherwise.

That was me, until I took Mari Winsor’s Early Bird Challenge. What a world of difference 20 minutes can make every morning. For the past 10 days, I took the challenge seriously and refused to hit snooze. Sure, the first couple of days I buried my head in the pillow and procrastinated getting up, but the extra time gave me the chance to make a healthy breakfast, pack my gym bag without forgetting anything (socks!) and even blow dry my hair before work. I left the house every day on time and didn’t have to speed walk to the subway. That alone reduced so much stress from my mornings, I can’t even tell you. On the Facebook Event page, lots of you shared your courageous efforts to rise and shine with smiles on your faces. Even though some of the time they were forced smiles (a lot of you admitted this was really hard and I agree!), many of you got through this 10 day battle with a little help from friends and family. And that takes me to the two recipients of a $50 Spa & Wellness Gift Card by Spa Week…

We’re sending two reformed sleeping beauties to the spa…

But first, thank you to all those who shared and expressed your struggles and hopes, successes and setbacks. And now to award each of the two Early Bird Challenge participants with one $50 Spa & Wellness Gift Card each…

Patty and Lisa D! This mother-daughter duo decided to take Mari’s Challenge together, even though they were both admittedly not morning people (it runs in the family). But together they supported each other and experienced those extra 20 minutes gained, together. Well done ladies!

Patty: My daughter and I both decided to take the challenge together. I’m not a morning person but I made sure not to hit snooze today. The most difficult part was just motivating myself to get up and move. Once I was up I felt good. I spent the extra time having an relaxing breakfast and reading a book

Lisa: My mom and I did this one together. While she was I fan…me, not so much. I’m not a morning person at all. So getting up without my normal snooze was difficult.

We’re glad you enjoyed the am together – or at least tried to. Thank you for sharing.

Winners, please contact daily(at)spaweekmedia(dot)com within 3 business days to redeem your prize. We can’t wait to hear from a more fierce and fabulous you!
