From the Experts: Staff Spa Week Picks

Here at Spa Week we eat live and breathe SPA. Here are our informed picks for the places we’re heading to relax this week!

A lot of effort goes into planning Spa Week, enough so that even those of us in the wellness industry can get a bit stressed over it. That’s why we’re just as excited as you when Spa Week rolls around each season and we get to treat ourselves to $50 services! Here is an inside look at the expert-approved locations the Spa Week staff will be visiting this event:

I’m going in for a Grapefruit Detox Cleanse Facial with Diamond Peel, Pineapple Exfoliating Treatment, Grapefruit and Mandarin Mask, Extractions and Oxygen Treatment at Joanna Vargas Salon, Skin Care Sanctuary. She’s a top celebrity facialist and I’ve been dying to try this spring facial. I can’t wait to go!

Spa Week is the perfect time to spoil yourself, so I’m also going to CityTouch Licensed Massage Therapy for a Personalized Massage. This is much needed – I’ve been training for a half marathon (it’s Sunday, 4/27) and I need to release some tension before the big race.

This Spa Week I’m headed to Euphoria Spa in Tribeca, for a Signature Fresh Air 10-Step Facial with Oxygen Blast and Moonstone Marmassage. I am excited for this facial because I am long overdue for one. I also was intrigued by this particular facial, as it was something I’ve never gotten done before. This spa also looks quaint and cozy.

I am going to Ling Skin Care—Union Square on Wednesday for both treatments: the Tourmaline Body Wellness Therapy and Energy Lift Facial with Tourmaline Gemstone. I’ve always wanted to try out the location since she is celeb fave, and it’s so close to Spa Week HQ!

Anne, Loyalty Program Manager

I can’t wait for my appointment at CityView Spa in Long Island City for a Swedish Massage! Because the treatments are only $50, I can afford to bring my sister (who’s visiting) to the spa too! Plus, CityView has an array of amenities—including saunas, steam rooms, on-site bar and restaurant, so we plan to enjoy the afternoon there.

Liora, Graphic Designer & Project Lead

I am going to L’Institut Sothys New York with my sister and we are both getting the 50 Minute European Facial with Extractions. I am also going to CityView Spa, with my husband for the 60 Minute Full Body Deep Tissue Massage. With the treatments being so cheap this is the perfect time to go all out!

Aqualia Spa is one of my top go-to spas in Manhattan for massages. I love that I can always get an appointment there last-minute, so it’s no surprise that they’re accommodating me this week even though I literally just called them a day ago to squeeze me in. I normally prefer Swedish Massages, but after the stress my body has endured from the long winter we’ve had, I really “knead” stronger pressure. That’s why I’m opting to receive the Aqualia Deep Tissue Body Massage for that extra attention to my sore and achy muscles.

This weekend I’m going to be relaxing at CityView Spa in Long Island City. I’m going with my best friend and we’re both going to get a Swedish Massage.  I’m so excited because A: it’s my first Spa Week! and B: I’m in desperate need of a massage and this place looks awesome!

This weekend I’m headed to Lavender Beauty Zone in Flushing. They got some amazing reviews for the All-Natural Organic Facial, so Spa Week seemed like the perfect time to give it a try! Plus, its 75 minutes which is always a bonus.

#TBT: The First Spa Week

Spa Week first happened TEN years ago…and we’ve been making headlines ever since!

folded-newspaper21

In honor of this #ThrowbackThursday, we’re taking it back TEN whole years…to when Spa Week first stepped onto the scene in New York City as the new way of the wellness-minded. Back in the fall of 2004, when Facebook first erupted on college campuses and the Boston Red Sox made front page news for winning the World Series for the first time in 86 years, Spa Week was also the talk of the town.

Ever since we broke into the wellness biz in 2004, Spa Week has revolutionized the way the masses both think about, and access the spa. When $50 spa services began with the new twice-yearly Spa Week Events, Spa Week broke down the financial barrier of going to the spa, and made the lifestyle accessible for all. We’ve loved bringing you massages, facials, body scrubs, nail services and more for the past 10 years, and we’re truly looking forward to the next 10! Happy Spa Week, everyone!

Dangerous Beauty Products Exposed In Free App

The most dangerous chemicals in beauty products are being uncovered in a new app called Think Dirty.

DCF 1.0

While organic diets have become increasingly common in the U.S. thanks to startling information about the dangers of chemicals and pesticides, consumers are still being exposed to toxins in an unlikely place.

That’s because many of us remain blindly unaware of the hidden dangers that lie within our beauty products. Think of it this way – our skin is the largest organ in the body, so what we put on it has a pretty widespread effect. And if we’re slathering up with harmful chemicals, some of which are even believed to cause cancer, than this poses a serious threat to our health and wellness.

This is what Lily Tse, a Toronto entrepreneur, was thinking when she came up with her new app called Think Dirty. With a breast cancer surviving mom, Tse quickly became aware of the potential dangers of beauty products. “I pay a lot of attention to food and a lot of other stuff, but then I realized that cosmetics and beauty are like a taboo,” she explained.

Tse’s new app breaks the silence on beauty products, however, providing consumers with an easy to use way of detecting unsafe ingredients. The free app not only gives information about almost 70,000 products from North America and Europe, but it also provides safer alternatives to products that are deemed high on the ‘Dirty Meter’.

While Tse’s invention will certainly serve to keep beauty consumers informed, another alternative is to commit to using organic products that are free of hazardous ingredients. Many spas have taken an oath to offer organic products during treatments, and some are even participating in Spa Week! Find one in a city near you, and book now before it’s too late!

There’s still time to book your Spa Week treatment – but not much! Head over to SpaWeek.com to find a treatment today!

Happy Spa Week! We couldn’t be more excited that it has finally arrived. Now that this good fortune has been bestowed upon you ($50 spa treatments–duh), we feel that it is only responsible of us to to make sure that you are well prepared for the relaxation ahead. To make the most of your experience, see our Ten Commandments of Spa Week:

  1. Thou Shall Take A Vow Of Wellness. Spa Week’s mission is to spread wellness, and after you see how amazing you feel at the spa, mental and physical relaxation and rejuvenation will be your mission too.
  2. Thou Shalt Not Be Nervous. There’s no need, the spa is a welcoming place and your esthetician or therapist will always make you feel comfortable and at-home!
  3. Thou Shall Give Praise. If you loved your Spa Week service, we want to know! You can rank your spa experience at SpaWeek.com.
  4.  Remember the Keep Spa Time Holy. Leave your cell phones (and worries!) at home, or check them in your locker.
  5. Honor Thy Therapist/Esthetician. Tip on the full price if you are satisfied with your service!
  6. Thou Shalt Not Arrive Late. Spa Week is, naturally, a very busy time! If you come late it could throw off the spa’s entire schedule.
  7. Thou Shalt Not Forget To Cancel an Appointment (if you cannot make it). It’s just common courtesy!
  8. Thou Shall Always Share. Make your spa day extra-special by sharing it with friends or family who could also use some pampering.
  9. Thou Shalt Not Wait Til the Last Minute ….appointments COULD get all booked up!
  10. Thou Shalt Not Covet Another Person’s Spa Treatment. Hey, they’re $50 each – get your own!

Now you are ready to travel yonder, into the Promised Land full of hot stones, eucalyptus aromatherapy oil, Himalayan salt scrubs and every other type of soothing bliss your heart desires. We hope you thoroughly enjoy your spa day!
