From SWAT Team to Spa Week – NBC San Diego

This morning on NBC San Diego while reporter Chris Chan was getting tear gassed at a SWAT standoff in Chula Vista, reporter Megan Tevrizian was getting a 50 Min Hot Lava Shell Massage and a 50 Min Elemental Nature Facial, 2 of the $50 Spa Week treatments at Quattra Via Aveda in Carlsbad. Fair? Hardly. But since a scary case of domestic violence barricading would be way out of place on Spa Week Daily, here’s the cheery, green-faced spa segment that aired this morning at the 3,500-square-foot relaxation gallery you see below:

5 Almost Free Things To Do This Weekend 11.12.10

Guest Contributor: Miss Cozy

Because of the cold weather, we usually bundle up more. As we go in and out
of temperature-controlled rooms or the thermometer rises and falls during
the day, we tend to be overdressed, causing moisture to be lost through
perspiration. For winter wear, we often choose irritating fabrics like wool
that can cause friction, more dryness, and accompanying itching and flaking. Or we may select materials (i.e., leather, nylon) that don’t allow the skin to breathe; this creates dampness that can trap bacteria against the skin
which, over the long run, causes irritations.

When dressing for winter, use non-irritating fabrics such as cotton, which
doesn’t trap moisture on the skin’s surface and can be worn for warmth or
coolness. Keep in mind, however, that cotton once wet, does not dry quickly. The best material for “wicking away” moisture from the skin is a synthetic material, like polyester or polypropylene. Also, it is best to dress in layers, so that you can add and remove clothing items to suit the changes in temperature.

5 Almost Free Things To Do This Weekend 09.24.10

Guest Contributor: Miss Cozy

As the winds change, it is likely that your skin will be exposed to dryness and chapping. Look to the produce of the season to prepare a nourishing mask for your skin. Pumpkin is ideal – not only is it high in vitamin A, C and antioxidants, it has wonderful moisturizing properties. Prepare a mask of 2 Tbs cooked pumpkin and 1 Tbs honey. Apply it all over your face and leave for about 10-15 minutes before washing off.

Check out CozyWallet.com for more swank ways to save money, and look good doing it.

5 Almost Free Things To Do This Weekend

Even though it’s the “Dog Days of Summer,” (or the Spa Days Of Summer as we like to call it when we give away $500 gift cards), that doesn’t mean we should look and smell our best.  Not everyone can afford those pricey celebrity “sweat halting” injections – so we found another alternative.

Miss Cozy’s Tip of the Day: Try a deodorant with Aluminum Chloride as the active ingredient, as it blocks your pores from sweating profusely.  If you’re just switching deodorants from your normal routine, you might want to start off with the least amount of Aluminum Chloride – to get your body used to the transition. (It’ll usually contain about 12% as the active ingredient) And in case you want something for your face, try Facial Wipes that contain a mild deodorant – just swipe them on your face and the astringent goes to work and blocks sweat pores fast!

If you have the chance, try to stop by one of these great events this weekend:

(Check out CozyWallet.com for more swank ways to save money!)

Phoenix, AZ – Remember those days filled with shopping sprees for new clothes? Yup… you guessed it… It’s “Back to School Time.”  The Shops at Norterra decided to make a party out of it – so why not reap some of the benefits? Stop by on Saturday, August 7, 6-9pm for Live music, food samplings, and most importantly, a Fall Fashion Show. The first 100 people to come to the customer service booth will receive a free $10 gift card for The Shops at Norterra (near Coldwater Creek).  Enjoy a free Norterra shopping bag with any purchase (while supplies last). norterrashopping.com

San Diego, CA – Ever feel so close to your community that you wanted to throw a party to celebrate it?  Well that’s what happens in the heart of Hillcrest during this time of year..  “In 1940, World War II was underway, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president, and the small community of Hillcrest hoisted its neon sign over the town’s main intersection for the first time.

But as decades passed, the sign became worn and eventually went dark. In 1983 it was taken down — but not for long. Volunteers raised $4,000 for its restoration and a year later the sign was returned to its rightful spot over University Avenue at Fifth Avenue. On Aug. 26, 1984, the sign was officially re-lighted, and the gathered crowd went wild, cheering and tooting toy horns for almost an hour. That was the unofficial start of CityFest, Hillcrest’s community celebration of music, art and community spirit, which has taken place every year since.”

CityFest, which will be held on August 8th 2010 from noon until 8pm, has turned into a huge celebration of community spirit through music, arts, crafts, food, games, live headliner music, and a beer garden.  In the evening, the historic Hillcrest sign will again be symbolically “re-lighted” for the 26th time. But not before thousands of San Diegans enjoy a day full of dancing, eating, drinking, and shopping.  CityFest 2010 will feature a Grande Stage all day long with the sounds of local San Diego bands and well known bands from California. hillcrestcityfest.com

Chicago, IL Pasta and Vino??  Who needs a vacation when you can enjoy a staycation during Chicago’s ‘Little Italy’ Taylor Street Festa Italiana.  Running Thursday, August 5, 5 pm – 11 pm, Friday, August 6, 11:30 am to 11 pm, Saturday, August 7, Noon to 11 pm, Sunday, August 8, Noon – 10 pm, enjoy continuous live entertainment, Italian food specialties and beer/wine from the authentic restaurants in Chicago’s Little Italy area – Taylor Street at Ashland Avenue, Chicago onestientertainment.com

Dallas, TX – Instead of Dog Days of August, it should be Dollar days in August, as it is at the Dallas Arboretum, where everyone pays $1 admission everyday through the month of August.  Guests will want to stop by the Hoffman Family Gift Store where there are great items for only $1!!  And most importantly, cool off with $1 iced teas and sodas at the Lula Mae Slaughter Dining Terrace…  Dallas Arboretum – 8525 Garland Road, Dallas, TX 75218 (214-515-6500) dallasarboretum.org

Salt Lake City, UT – The annual Park City Kimball Arts Festival, one of the top art festivals in the country, will be held August 6–8, 2010. More than 230 artists have been selected to participate in this juried show, featuring work in 12 categories – ranging from paintings to jewelry to sculpture and photography.  The three-day festival is set to offer a newly programmed multi-sensory artistic experience for its usual 45,000 attendees, including visual-art exhibitions, live musical performances, cuisine-related activities, art-focused film screening.  A new addition to this year’s festival, Taste of Art, will showcase the menus and cuisine of Park City restaurants. Many local establishments have partnered with the Kimball Art Center to offer arts festival attendee’s exclusive discounts and deals. This will be held on Main Street from Friday, August 6, 6pm – 9 pm, Saturday, August 7th9 am – 7 pm, til Sunday, August 8th9 am – 6 pm (435-649-8882) kimballartcenter.org
