Backstage at Naeem Khan: Massage Meets Hollywood Glam

Day 4 of working at Spa Week. I get an email with the subject line, “Would you want to…” from Michelle. Opening it leads to a moment of excitement and fear. “Would you like to go back stage at the Naeem Khan show at Fashion Week tonight? –Michelle” First thought, “YES!” Second thought, “Why did I have to pick my clothes in the dark this morning?”  After turning my shirt inside out and rummaging around my suitcase (purse) for some sort of jewelry—I was ready for my first Mercedes Benz Fashion Week experience.

I had two missions leaving the office Thursday night. Mission 1: Don’t get lost. Mission 2: Figure out how Spa Week and Fashion Week fit together. After frantically meandering around Lincoln Center, I finally found the press check-in. Mission 1: Completed.

As I made my way backstage, the first thing I saw when I walked in was hairstylist, Philippe Mensah giving one of the models a massage. How perfect! Models receiving complimentary treatments before they strut down the runway.  When I asked Philippe what was with the rub down, he responded in a thick French accent: “When the girls are stressed or nervous, I give massage so they can relax. Then I can do the hair.” Philippe must have known I was coming. He practically did my job for me: tying in Spa Week and Fashion Week in one perfect moment of relaxation. Mission 2: Completed.

Philippe then introduced me to lead hair stylist Laurent Philippon. Laurent explained that the low chignon hairdos he was creating were  inspired by the structure and elegance of the film Black Swan. Naeem is one smart cookie, incorporating one of this year’s blockbuster movies with his dazzling red carpet gowns. I guarantee you will see more than one of these looks on the Oscars’ red carpet. Hand-beaded bodices, open backs, plunging necklines and ostrich feathers: Hello Hollywood!

Overall, my first Fashion Week was amazing… Can’t wait to watch the Academy Awards and spot a Naeem Khan gown. The best fashion Eye Spy EVER. If you see one before I do, Tweet us @SPAWEEK

Behind the Scenes Golden Globes Award: @JasonBinn

Last night you were either plopped in front of the TV tuned into the nail biter playoff game between the Jets and the Patriots or you found yourself enthralled with the the super glamorous action at the 68th Golden Globes Awards. Thanks to the power of the internet, pictures were instantly posted on blogs, opinions flying the best and worst dressed. And because we cannot consume it all fast enough, Twitter proves once again to be the gift that keeps on giving.

In the spirit of honoring the best of the best, we would like to award a virtual Golden Globe to the Most Outstanding Twitter Coverage of the evening:

And the Golden Globe goes to… @JasonBinn! Jason Binn is the Chairman of Niche Media, publishing Gotham, Capitol File, Hamptons, LA Confidential and other magazines, and known for his high profile network of personal friends. In fact, it would not be surprising to learn he is personally friends with every single person who has ever appeared in his magazines, or… say… attended the Golden Globes last night. From red carpet closeups to behind the scenes with his friends at the afterparty, he truly took his followers behind the scenes. It was cool to see celebs unperched from their red carpet statues to actually mingling and resembling normal people.

Take a look at the star-studded evening through the highly esteemed lens of Jason Binn’s Blackberry (although many seem to be borrowed from the interwebs, it’s still the most solid coverage of the evening):

Per usual, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were the symbol of perfection on the red carpet. She looked like a true goddess in her sparkly emerald green gown with Brad as her best accessory.

Not to be outdone, Anne Hathaway styled by Rachel Zoe showed up in a champagne gown, bold shouldered sparkler that seemed to hug her curves perfectly.

Green was obviously the suprise color of the night. Catherine Zeta Jones showed up with her husband Michael Douglas who is also a cancer survivor.

Fashion folks went ‘Mad’ for Christina Hendricks’ red on red.

Obviously aware of that fact that Christina Hendricks’ would steal the show, Emma Stone debuted a hot new blonde hair color that went perfectly with her peachy nude dress and makeup.

Kim Kardashian was snapped at one of many after parties wearing a curve hugging black lace gown and an impeccable red pout.

@JasonBinn caught up with Paris and Nicky Hilton.

Oops moment? Nothing escapes a cell phone camera. Hayden Panettiere was smiley in one of her signature plunging gowns.

More behind the scenes footage makes us really wish we there. Here is a shot of Robin Antin, TV Correspondent Maria Menunos, and Kim Kardashian. All equally gorgeous.

Lastly, Jason took a shot of Sophia Vergara, Ocean Drive Magazine’s January cover girl.

For more inside scoop from one of the most connected people on the planet, check Jason Binn’s Twitter feed.

In Honor of Alexander McQueen

Given Alexander McQueen’s untimely and tragic death, we wanted to pay tribute to the vibrant life that shone through his work and his collections. Here’s just one instance of McQueen’s inimitable style: the infamous “Armadillo Shoes” worn by Lady Gaga in her edgy “Bad Romance” video.

armadillo

With 10-inch heels, the shoes look almost alien–used by Gaga to great effect in dancing sequences, where you have to admit “alien” is a pretty great compliment.

What’s your favorite McQueen look?

Lady Gaga Brings it to the Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards featured a host of interesting fashion choices from the music industry’s luminaries, but let’s cut the fat and talk about the real spectacle of the night – Lady GaGa’s ever-more-insane parade of sartorial gems.

Join me on a wonderful journey down the wormhole that was the Lady’s Grammy wardrobe!

First, we have a dress made of hoops and cotton candy, constructed for the permanent wind-tunnel look. It is relatively normal when you consider what’s to come!

Then GaGa sat down at the world’s weirdest piano with the world’s only Elton John.

Yes, Lady Gaga is insane and yes, her outfits may not be everyone’s cup of tea.  But imagine how boring these things might be without her…
