The Kardashians Open With a Spa-Bang!

The season premiere of Kourtney and Kim Take New York was on E! Sunday night and boy did it feature some spa madness! Just when we think the clan can’t top themselves… they somehow do. This one hour episode featured TWO controversial healthy living practices. Let’s begin the lesson…

First, Kourtney gets an olive oil enema at an ayurvedic spa in NYC. There’s even Twitter proof:

Ayurveda spas practice holistic therapy rooted in ancient medicine originating in India. Kim resisted the treatment luckily because back at the hotel Kourtney leaked all over the bed!  Michelle recently enjoyed a coffee  and chlorophyll colonic (but didn’t suffer the same fate Kourtney did).

And the craziness didn’t stop there – the sisters decided to try a nude yoga session with some friends. Oh my! We’re all for getting naked at the spa (see video below) but this is a whole other beast. Nude yoga has stirred up some controversy even though celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow have confessed to going bare. Supposedly doing the downward dog position in the buff will help you lose those inhibitions, but there are some skeptics. Like Kris Humphries.

So next time you’re at the spa, ask yourself “What would the Kardashians do?”

This Beauty Secret Has Us in a Pickle

Cleopatra. Her name resonates opulence and glamour. She will forever be associated with a handful of women (Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Helen of Troy, Marie Antoinette… Kim Kardashian?, etc.) who have earned a reputation for extravagant indulgences and making powerful men fall to their knees. Cleopatra’s secret? Pickles! She attributed her good looks to bathing in warm milk and a daily diet of pickles. For centuries, people all over the world have believed in the power of pickles. In ancient Egypt, everyone from peasants to Pharohs consumed pickles for their nutritional value and because they were thought to enhance beauty. Even Roman emperors believed they could boost the physical and spiritual strength to their troops.

In honor of the historical and healthy pickle, join us in celebrating National Pickle Day!
Pickles have their own day because they are healthy, low-calorie (the average dill pickle has just 15 calories) and are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins (including Vitamin C). Cucumbers used to make dill pickles contain ascorbic acid, known as caffeic acid and Vitamin C. These nutrients help improve skin’s health and reduce irritation, while vitamin C can boost your  immune system. In addition, research has also shown that vinegar can help with weight loss.

Need another reason to add pickles to your diet? They’re the favored snack of Snooki! Convinced? We thought so!

Happy National Pickle Day!

Wedding Wednesday: Gene Simmons Finally Ties the Knot!

The man who swore he would never utter the words “I Do,” Mr. Gene Simmons, is married. He FINALLY tied the knot to long-time girlfriend (28 years!) and mother of his two children, Shannon Tweed. Gene is the front man of legendary rock band KISS and infamously has claimed to have slept with over 4500 women. Thankfully the groom didn’t don his KISS makeup for the ceremony but instead opted for a classic tux.

Here’s the official invite…

The couple shares a love of plastic surgery and a sense of humor.

The wedding will air October 18th on their A&E reality show Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Congrats to the couple!

Wedding Wednesday: Bachelor Wedding #2

The Bachelor has produced its second marriage born out of the popular reality TV show, and perhaps the most scandalous. Last year’s Bachelor, Jason Mesnick, is set to marry contestant Molly Malaney in a two-hour TV special on ABC next month. There’s just one catch.

As devoted watchers of the Bachelor might know, Malaney was Mesnick’s second choice. In the post-season finale wrap-up episode, it was revealed that Mesnick dumped his first choice, Melissa Rycroft, for Malaney (it is shocking how un-classy that reality television can be!)

The first Bachelorette to get married, Trista Rehn, criticized Mesnick’s 180-flip on Access Hollywood last fall, condemning him for being fickle in matters of the heart. And perhaps she has a leg to stand on – Rehn has been married to her first choice contestant since 2003. Mesnick and Malaney might want to take notes.

Will you watch the second Bachelor wedding?

Big Family, Big Controversy

The stars of TLC's new reality show.

The stars of TLC's new reality show.

TLC, home of popular reality television shows and documentaries, is coming up against a brand-new kind of controversy. Their new show, “One Big Happy Family”, features a family of four in North Carolina struggling to lose weight – and it’s coming under fire from bloggers and TV critics who say the show exploits the family for entertainment value.

The Coles, the African-American family featured in the show, weighed a combined total of 1,377 pounds when the show began. And unlike other reality television shows about weight loss, they weren’t given help from trainers or nutritionists; the show depicts the Coles struggling to adopt healthy habits on their own.

Critics of the show have said that the show exploits the family by painting them as exaggerated caricatures, making it easier for viewers to treat them like characters rather than real people facing real struggles.

What do you think of reality TV shows focusing on weight loss? Are they inherently exploitative or are they an educational tool?
