Summer Nail Tips: Make Your Mani Last Longer

This Mani Monday we discovered 6 tips and tricks to get a long-lasting manicure that can stand up to summer.

Between beach days and afternoons outside, being exposed to summer elements can wreak havoc on your manicure. Yet, our busier schedules during the warmer months make it even tougher to keep chip-free nails.

That’s why we did a little research to find out exactly how you can get a long-lasting manicure. We discovered some tips and tricks that may surprise you, and products that boast miraculous capabilities. Find out 6 ways to get a perfect manicure that can stand up to summer:

CND Scrub

1. Clean Nails Thoroughly – It’s imperative that nails be completely clean of dirt and residue to ensure that the polish can properly set and adhere. After you remove old polish with nail polish remover, try using a product like CND ScrubFresh Nail Surface Cleanser to get any leftover grime off.

Available for $12.63 on

Base Coat

2. Use A Base Coat – One of the steps people most commonly step is applying a base coat. The base coat creates a surface for the polish to bond to, and seals it in to prevent chipping. Experts recommend avoiding two-in-one base and top coats for optimum durability. A sticky base coat like Borghese Magnetico Adhesive Base Coat acts like a grip to keep polish intact.

Glitter Polish

3. Try Shimmery Shades – We all know that the toughest polishes to remove are the shimmery or glittery variety. Use this to your advantage by layering a shimmery polish on top of your manicure to provide a long-lasting finish. Textured polishes are more resistant to chips. We love Formula X Liquid Crystals in a summery shade like Solar Flare.

Available for $12.50 at

4. Coat The Tips – The most susceptible part of the nail to chipping are the tips, which suffer nicks more often. Counteract this by painting an extra coat on the tips. You should swipe on a horizontal line before you apply the first coat in order for it to blend naturally.

5. Let Each Coat Dry – If you want your mani to last longer, a little patience during the process is necessary. Be sure to allow each coat (including the base coat) to dry completely before painting on the next layer. This is crucial because when each coat dries entirely, it can properly bond to the next.

Top Coat

6. Reapply Top Coat Often – A little bit of maintenance can go a long way, especially during summer when you’re contending with the sun and sand. Swipe on a layer of top coat every few days to counteract the wear and tear that your nails are exposed to. A quick dry version like Deborah Lippman Addicted To Speed Top Coat means that reapplying only takes a few minutes.

Everyday Beauty Blunders: I Spilled Nail Polish on My Rug

Got nail polish on your carpet? Don’t panic, here’s what one of our editors did to remedy this beauty blunder.

It’s happened to the best of us. You’re lounging on the couch, painting your nails while watching The Voice. You get so excited when a really awesome new contestant chooses your favorite team (Team Adam of course), that you jump up and BAM. OPI Eurso Euro is now splattered all over your tan rug. Oh. No. What’s a girl to do? You can only keep the remote over a stain for so long. Here are the steps I took to remedy this beauty blunder:

Attempt 1: I tried letting the spill dry a bit and then pulling the nail polish out of the rug. In doing this, I pulled out a little bit too much of the actual rug. This was not the answer.

Attempt 2: Nail polish remover seemed like the logical next step. I soaked a cotton pad with nail polish remover and just scrubbed the stain, as I would my fingernails.  To my dismay, not much happened.

Attempt 3: In a panic, I began trying to cut the stain out of the rug with scissors. Don’t try this one at home kids.

Attempt 4: Hairspray—ahh the savior of all things seemingly unsalvageable. Spray a paper towel (not the carpet directly!) with lots of hairspray and scrub. This definitely worked the best. Hairspray gets pen out of clothing and purses too—so it’s best to keep a cheap bottle on hand at all times (you know, so you don’t have to waste your expensive, favorite bottle).

Beauty Product Review: Kardashian Beauty Cabana Glow Collection

Add some sparkle to your fall beauty routine with Kardashian Beauty’s Cabana Glow Collection.

Kardashian Beauty collage

The Kardashian sisters are known around the world as style icons. Besides designing their own Kardashian Kollection clothing line, they have the newly branded Kardashian Beauty (formerly Khroma) makeup line. We tried their fall 2013 Kardashian Beauty Cabana Glow Collection and each product looks like it fell straight out of one of their makeup bags. They’re sure to give you a Kardashian glow no matter what the season.

First, we tried the Watercolors Oceanliner in Azure ($11.99) which is a gorgeous long-lasting teal color. It glides on like cream eyeliner with the ease of a pencil. When you mix it with a little charcoal eyeliner, you get a nice hint of color that’s not too over-the-top.

The Nudes Nail Lacquers ($5.99 each) come in six different pearlized shades that you can easily transition from summer to fall. Although they look like they might go on sheer, they’re nice and thick!

The best part of the collection was Radiant Shimmer Lip Crayon ($8.99). It gives a subtle, shimmery color that doesn’t fade. It has the moisturizing feel of a lip balm, yet it looks like a lipstick. You can even swipe it on your eyes or blend it on your cheeks!

All of these products are available now at Ulta, CVS and Sears.

The three glitter polishes boast an out-of-this-world holographic shine with a multitude of colored sparkles that make your nails look like you’ve dipped them in jewels! You can layer them over one of the shimmers or wear them by themselves.

One of our favorites in this collection is the radiant Fake It Til You Make It, a shimmer with added multi-colored glitter for the ultimate gold mani. Another favorite is the Rolling in the Deep (love the Adele reference!) crème, which is not your average deep blue. It has tiny specks of silver glitter that make your nails resemble a starry midnight sky.

The crème and shimmer polishes are $17 and the glitter polishes are $19. They’re available now online and at Barney’s New York, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Make sure to get your hands on them before they’re gone!
