Smashbox Photo Op Eye Makeup

A Smashbox look using the Brown Eyes palette.

We love any product that makes picking the right eye makeup colors easier. That’s why it’s so easy to love this Smashbox Photo Op Eye Enhancing Palette.

In 3 different palettes — one for brown, hazel, and blue eyes — Smashbox hand-picked the 6 best shades for each eye color. They even provide a video of the exact application steps and techniques.

We love the idea of using navy in a different way — the makeup artist suggests using it not to line or shade on the lid, but rather to contour the crease. The effect is really pretty.

Foreign Brand to Know: Rouge Bunny Rouge

“Once every fifty years, a vast palatial hall, filled with rows of velvet seats that stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see, plays host to the Epic of the Enchanted Garden. The celebration starts at dusk and continues all the way through until dawn…”

You might think this is the beginning of a very interesting children’s book. Instead, it’s a beauty product description on London/Moscow-based Rouge Bunny Rouge‘s website.

Victorian fairy tales and Tsarist aristocracy are the inspiration behind the “Enchanted Garden” theme. The products, packaging, and marketing all ooze femininity and magic. Butterflies and flowers decorate the online store that features products like Glassy Gloss, Blush Wand, and Deliquesce Make-up Melt Cleanser. Feel a little like Alice in Wonderland as you click through the site? So do we…

In fact, last night’s especially ethereal fairy-focused episode of True Blood is starting to make more sense after spending some time with Rouge Bunny Rouge. The products are all about fun and fantasy. That’s what beauty should be, right?

On the color side, the lip glosses and cream eye shadows get two thumbs up from us. On the skincare side, we adore the way the brand goes the extra mile with education. For example, here’s a visual guide to giving yourself a pampering lymphatic drainage massage with the brand’s cleanser. How cool is that?

You can browse the products on the Rouge Bunny Rouge website, or purchase via Beautyhabit.com.

What Does Your Lipstick Shape Say About You?

Do you remember that lipstick phenomenon back about 10-15 years ago, when suddenly everyone was examining their lipstick shape like a palm reading? If you take a look at all your lipsticks, you’ll see a general pattern in how they form to your lips. And apparently, we learned, the shape of your lipstick holds great meaning, and provides insight into your personality, strengths, weaknesses and emotional tendencies. This all came rushing back to me when I was out with my friend Justine the other night and she went to reapply her pout with this:

WHOAH! What sort of psychological implications can be made based upon this double-edged, double-black diamond of lipstick shapes? Let’s find out – here’s what Beauty Press reports…

Well, Justine would be closest to shape #1, and she does have that strong personality. As for me, sure I’m a power woman (#4)! See below – that gentle slope really brings out my energy and creativity, no?

What about you, sweet lips? What shape does your lipstick form to, and does your lip-psychoanalysis match your personality?

OFFICIAL RULES

Calling All Makeup Artists! 6 Artists Compete, Judge Now

It’s truly amazing what a talented makeup artist can do. He or she reaches into their bottomless makeup trunk, a beautiful mess of shadows, liners, primers, concealers, mascaras and lipsticks hitting every Pantone shade in existence, and in under an hour can turn you into a living, breathing masterpiece – that looks exactly like you, only hotter. Or softer. Or from another era.

Remember that recent report we covered on the importance of makeup in the workplace? It’s no secret that cosmetics play a role in our every day lives, the only secrets are how to achieve the precise look we so desire.

A few months ago I was invited to be on the panel of judges for Calling All Makeup Artists, a makeup showdown between six artists presented by YOUR NAME Professional Brands, 35-year-old industry leader in private label cosmetics for the salon and spa industry. As someone who has worked with many a makeup artist – from my days in editorial interning at VOGUE and Glamour, to the many beauty whizzes who have transformed me for events, on-camera appearances and weddings – I couldn’t wait to be on board to support.

Here’s how it worked: YOUR NAME sponsored six up-and-coming artists in a career-changing opportunity on October 3rd. They partook in a day-long photography makeup workshop led by renowned makeup artist David Maderich, during which each contestant was charged with creating an interpretation of YOUR NAME’s Spring 2012 collection. Each rendition was captured by acclaimed photographer Roberto Ligresti and handed over to a panel of beauty industry veterans – including yours truly! – to evaluate and select one lucky winner. The winner, yet to be announced, will be featured in the Spring 2012 YOUR NAME catalog which will be seen by over 12,000 beauty industry professionals.

THE JUDGES: Julie Keller, Editor-In-Chief, American Spa, Maggie Mulhern, Beauty and Fashion Director, Modern Salon, and me - Michelle Joni Lapidos, Director of Social Media & Editor of Spa Week Daily, SPA WEEK.

THE CONTESTANTS:

Devra Bader - Devra Bader Beauty Spa
Larry Chowning – About Face Designs
Jennifer Meletis – Lois Christy Salon
Monica Flor – Moka Cosmetics
Caty Flor – Moka Cosmetics
Zekira Kobas – Adam Broderick Salon

THE 6 FINAL IMAGES: After the glamorous showdown, I received the best final photo of each artist’s shoot, below. They haven’t yet revealed which photo is from which artist, and the winner is yet to be selected… so weigh in below! Which look do you love most? Scroll down to see all the looks, and at the bottom you’ll see who got my vote, and the super-fly reason why.

EDITORIAL WINNER – Jennifer Meletis of Lois Christie Salon:

BRAND WINNER – Monica Verduzco of MOKA Cosmetics:

My favorite? #6. The delicate rosiness in the cheeks, the sweet, glossy coral lip, and of course – the eye shadow. That look was obtained by taking a pair of carefully placed lacy panties and airbrushing eye shadow over them!

Check back soon to see who the winner is when it’s announced. (UPDATE: Winners have been announced – it was a tie! Check their Facebook page to see the vote count, and I also updated the tied winners above.)

Have a gorgeous (Halloween makeup-filled) weekend!
