Claim Your Independence! 5 Things You Should Do By Yourself This Summer

We asked on our Facebook Page: ”What’s one thing that you enjoy doing independently, with nobody else, just Y-O-U? You chimed in with the responses below. Try those and our 5 things we think you should do by yourself this summer to claim your independence in little ways.
“Riding my horse” -Daphney Overocker
“Going for a long walk” -Laura Fairclough
“Running along the river” -Erin Koeppel
“Long night drives” -Esther Choi
“An empty house w/no one other than ME/MYSELF & I” -Sharice White
“A good massage”- Cecilia Wong
“(Getting a) Facial” – Cindy Scanlon Smith
“Singing at the top of my lungs to a great tune” -Debbie Bashford
“Yoga. I feel most focused when no one else is around” -Melissa Rogers

Having a little “me-time” is so important. You can celebrate your independence this week in so many more ways than devouring a cheeseburger, 2 hot dogs and steak all on your own.  A little solo time goes a long way.

1. Watch A Movie: It’s fun to cuddle on the couch for a flick or go to dinner and a movie with a good friend, but a movie with just you can be a delightful way to spend 90 minutes. Don’t be afraid to venture to the theater stag! Netflix is also an old time fave. Watch 3 of your favorite movies at once, return and replace with something new for just $8.99 a month. Just provide the buttery popcorn.

2. Write It All Down: Remember life before Twitter and Facebook? Yea we don’t either. Instead of unnecessarily spilling your darkest secrets into a a distant friend’s news feed… sit by yourself like the good old days and jot it all down. We promise no one will read it.

3. Shop ‘Til You Drop: Need a dress for a special occasion? Need some retail therapy? Don’t wait for your girlfriend to make time in her schedule–shop solo and depend on nobody’s opinion but your own. Another way to shop independently? Shop from the convenience of your iPhone with the Splendora Salescast app. With over 20 applications from you favorite sample sale sites like Ideeli and Gilt Groupe, you’ll never miss out on a good bargain buy again.

4. Take A Hot Bubble Bath: We can’t think of a more therapeutic version of alone time than taking a hot bubble bath. Experience the full ambiance with  scented candles and music playing in the background. Add some bath salts and it’s a heavenly escape.

5. At-Home Spa Day: And after you take a relaxing bath, give yourself an at-home facial. Gather up your old magazines, with tips and tricks that you promised yourself you would try and actually do it. Rummage through your fridge for the fruits and veggies required to give yourself an organic spa day. Your skin will thank you.

Little Luxury Report: Bump!

logo3

The Little Luxury:  Bump, the iPhone app that means you’ll never have to let anyone else put their grubby paws on your phone again.

Relationship status: I gave Hoccer a try for a while, but eventually came running back.

Bump what?: Bump allows you to select pretty much anything on your iPhone – contacts, photos, you name it – and transfer it to your friend’s iPhone or Android by simply bumping the phones together.

How-To: Fire bump up, select what you want to send, and tap phones together. There’s a delightful little vibration when the phones connect, and voila! You’re all shared.

Quoted: When you select info to bump, that info gets sent to the Bump servers. The super-smart algorithm uses location information and other “bump characteristics” to figure out where your bump partner’s phone is – then it gets sent over.

Not for you if…. You constantly want to be sending everything on your phone to lots of people all the time. First of all, control yourself. Maybe just try sending like one picture to one person, in which case Bump will work just great, and see how you like that. If you can’t force that much intimacy upon yourself, though, try Hoccer – another free program that works similarly, except you “fling” your info in a semicircle to be snapped up by multiple awaiting phones. Maybe I don’t have enough friends, but this is not nearly as much on my wavelength as Bump is – and my anecdotal experience suggests that Hoccer’s algorithms are less precise than Bump’s, which result in more dropped and failed transmissions.

How much: Like all the best apps, this baby’s free. And now you can be bumpin’ on your iPad, too!

The Zit List | 1.8.10

litlist-header

Welcome to the Zit List, where we tell you exactly what to think about events, people, and things that happened this week.

Thursday Night Lights
Last night small quarterback Colt McCoy suffered an injury to his shoulder, which quashed Texas’ dreams of a college football championship and thus hurt the rest of his Texas teammates more than it hurt him. Whether you’re a fan of football or not (and seriously, why are you not a fan of football? Most entertaining sport imaginable) this winning and losing on a tiny shoulder blade is the stuff of mythic archetype.

Nothing But A Hound Dog
LA denizens might enjoy tonight’s 25th Annual Elvis Birthday Bash, a celebration-slash-concert that features up to three dozen performers covering Elvis’ finest in Echo Park. The patient fellow who’s been organizing it since 1987 refers to planning the event every year as “a pleasant headache.” The least you LA Elvis fans can do is go support his labor of love.

The Gphone?
Google knocked the wind out of mobile phone carrier’s sails by announcing that they would sell their new Google phone through their brand-new online phone store and that the phone would be unlocked to work with any American carrier. If this works, it could spell the end of AT&T and Apple’s chokehold on the mobile phone market. Of course, the phones could still be terrible–we’re reserving judgment.

Put A Hat On It
Lady Gaga, musician and public crazy person, attended the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas wearing a sunhat made entirely of her own hair. She did this because she’s now serving as Chief Creative Officer of Polaroid. This entire turn of events is approved.
