Have you ever noticed when you become “resolute” about anything, you set yourself up for failure? For example, what happens if you don’t meet your resolution of 2012 weight loss? You feel worse about yourself than before and give up entirely (until 2013 resolutions, that is). Resolutions create a nasty cycle of over promising and under delivering that leaves you with no motivation to actually achieve what you want. (Except for this awesomely simple resolution Michelle kept all of 2011!)
Rather than setting rigid resolutions this year, try setting intentions. Intentions direct the mind towards goals you want to achieve in the upcoming year, while leaving a bit of wiggle room. There is aggressive immediacy to resolutions, (I must lose this weight NOW!) whereas intentions gently ask for a bit of patience and time.
Here are 3 Easy Intentions to create the healthiest and happiest YOU of 2012! Remember, you don’t have to do them all tomorrow. Simply set your intention to incorporate these steps into your life over the next few months and see what happens!
1. Reduce or eliminate coffee. Coffee concerns include dehydration and blood sugar ups and downs, making mood swings more frequent. Coffee is also highly acidic which can be troublesome to the digestive system. To start, try drinking organic green tea. It is loaded with antioxidants, beautifies the skin (ah yeah!) and still has caffeine to buffer your coffee cravings.
2. Visit the Farmers Market. Farmers Markets are the best way to start eating healthfully and connect with where your food comes from. By shopping at your local farmer’s market, you not only support your health but the health of farmers, your community, and the environment. Not bad for a quick shopping trip!
3. Move your body EVERY DAY! Start with simple activities, like walking, squats or yoga—start with 20 minutes a day and increase. And remember, exercise does not have to be done in a gym. Taking the stairs rather than the elevator counts!
4. Take time for yourself. Find activities that restore your energy, such as dancing, a bath, visiting a museum, or taking in a movie. Schedule a weekly date with yourself to do something that feeds your soul.
In the comments below tell me your New Year intentions for 2012. What are you excited about in this next year to come?
