Celeb Moms in the Beauty Biz

We appreciate mom all year long, but the time to make sure you show it is coming up in just a few weeks – Mother’s Day!  Many moms do it all – taking care of the kids, the house, the husband, the bills, and so much more. And celebrity mamas (aside from their sprawling estates and hired help) are no different! Many A-list mom-treprenuers juggle successful careers, beautiful families, and even have an Academy Award to boot! We wanted to take a minute to give them some credit — especially since many have joined us in the beauty industry by launching product lines, yoga apparel, and more.

In honor of Mother’s Day, here are our favorite Spa Week-approved celebrity mom-trepreneurs:

Alicia Silverstone

She may have caught some media slack for “pre-chewing” baby Bear’s food, but this is one Mama Bear who’s got her act together.  Alicia is committed to eco and vegan living, and helps to spread the mantra through a passionate following.

Juice Beauty: Alicia’s commitment to natural products is shown in her collaboration with Juice Beauty. The formulas are made from vegan and organic ingredients and can be found in sustainable packaging made from over 90% of recycled materials. The line includes a cleanser, moisturizer and pretty makeup!

“Kind” Life Brand: The Kind Life is Alicia’s website empire, where followers go for tips on living a happy, whole, and green life from her and her team. It’s an extension of her best-selling book, The Kind Diet, which offers vegan recipes and outlines the benefits of this healthier lifestyle.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth drew inspiration from the Bible in naming her little ones Apple and Moses – and then went on to create her own type of sanctuary for devotees – GOOP, where dedicated fans can come to follow (and worship) Gwyneth’s lifestyle advice.

GOOP: GOOP is a weekly subscription website offering tips on everything from homemaking to shopping, wellness and more. And not only that – the site is constantly working with new, exclusive collaborators and selling (often pricey) lifestyle must-haves.

Rachel Zoe

High-powered celeb stylist, Rachel Zoe, doubles as a doting mother to adorable son Skyler. And these days it seems like she’s at it nonstop dreaming up new business ventures, too!

Rachel Zoe Apparel: After years of dressing the hottest names in Hollywood, Zoe got behind the drawing board and finally started her own premium apparel collection – but this trendy line with a designer name tag doesn’t come cheap.

DreamDry: Zoe’s newest venture into the world of blow dry bars is only about two months old – but according to Racked the business can already be described as a booming success! The chic décor is exactly what we’d expect – and we can’t wait to try it out!

Josie Maran

This former VS Angel decided to spread her beauty wings and fly in 2007 when she launched eco-friendly beauty brand Josie Maran Cosmetics. Moms to be and women everywhere who care about the earth AND looking beautiful are thankful for Maran’s creativity!

Josie Maran Cosmetics Line: Josie Maran Cosmetics is a pioneer in the eco-friendly beauty field, as it was one of the first conscious lines to maintain a feeling of luxury, too. With a cult following of beauty editors, bloggers and celebrities alike, the Josie Maran product line continues to grow and introduce new favorites, including our Spa Week Beauty Editor’s must-have multitasking product, Argan Infinity Cream Intensive Oil!

Jessica Alba

This gorgeous mom got her start as a teenager in films like The Secret World of Alex Mack but boy, has she grown up since! With the additions of Honor and Haven, Jessica Alba now has her own Fantastic Four right at home!

The Honest Co.: Alba is another mom who champions the clean, chemical-free and eco-friendly. Inspired and empowered by motherhood, Alba felt the need to protect her children and ensure that only the safest products were used on them, thus The Honest Co. was born. Retailers of everything from bath and body products to diapers and eco cleaning supplies, consider this a one-stop shop for expectant mamas!

5 Gluten-Free Snacks You Are Sure to Love

Gluten what? Celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham are helping raise awareness about living a  gluten-free lifestyle. A quick lesson about gluten: gluten-free foods do not automatically make them good for you (darn!). It simply means that they don’t contain wheat, rye, barley, any gluten-containing cousins of wheat, and are processed in a gluten-free facility.

It has become easier to identify gluten-free products with food labeling laws that require companies to indicate if the food product contains wheat (the primary source of gluten in the diet) and/or if it was processed in a facility that also processes wheat.

Did Kavita’s post about how to lose weight by accident not convince you to hop on board? Well Healing Lifestyles and Spas have found 5 delicious snacks:

Mary’s Gone Crackers
Mary, a real person and the founder of the company has Celiac Disease and  had trouble finding delicious gluten-free foods. Her solution? Make them herself!

Oscars 2011: 4 Facials to Get a Glow Like Gwyneth

In a Red Sea of gowns at last night’s Oscars, there was one star who out shown the rest—literally. Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress was sparkly in all the right places. However, the 38 year old Glee-ful superstar’s best accessory wasn’t her sleek, glittering Calvin Klein sheath dress, it was her radiant skin.  The glow was almost more reflective than her dress!

Last week one of our Facebook fans, Samantha Krygier, asked:

“What is the best facial to get glowing skin?”

Looks like Gwyn showed off her dewy complexion at the perfect time. With skin so bright, we know Gwyn’s been hitting the spa just as hard as she (obviously) hits the gym.  There are a few different facial additives that we common folk can try at the spa to get the same healthy, natural looking skin.

Gwyneth Paltrow Needs More Sun, Less Screen

Are you getting enough sun? Gwyneth Paltrow's extreme low levels of Vitamin-D can lead to Osteoporosis.

It seems in the world of health you can never have too much of a good or bad thing and there will always be a heated debate of what is good for you and what isn’t. Such is the case with getting enough sun. Each year when winter takes its final bow and we’re introduced to the warm weather, the strict rules of applying SPF and staying out of the sun take effect. Millions develop skin cancer for venturing out unprotected, but what about those who suffer from a disease that is the total opposite?

Gwyneth Paltrow announced to the world on her blog GOOP that she is one of the unlucky few suffering from Vitamin D Deficiency. While most bring hats and umbrellas to the beach to shy away from the sun, the actress was ordered to get more sun or take a chance at developing osteoporosis.

Gwyneth writes: “I went on a prescription strength level of Vitamin D and was told to…spend a bit of time in the sun! I was curious if this was safe, having been told for years to stay away from its dangerous rays, not to mention a tad bit confused. “

We are too. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient and not enough has been linked to depression, heart disease, heart failure, infertility, bone loss, fractions and even cancer. Well, how do you combat the disease without frying in the sun like a slab of bacon?

Shine from Yahoo suggests getting at least 200 IU daily, and up to 800 mg. You can find Vitamin D in fortified milk, yogurt, eggs, salmon, or a multivitamin. What signs should you look out for? Signs of a D deficiency include muscle pain/weakness and bone pain. The only surefire way to know if you are D deficient is to get a blood test. Ask about it at your next physical.

Gwyneth’s Nashville Nook

Celeb and GOOP author Gwyneth Paltrow and family (Apple included) are going to be in Nashville for a while – so, as you do, Gwyneth had an industrial warehouse converted into a cutting-edge, million-dollar home in just 10 days.

In her newsletter, Gwyneth detailed the breakneck pace and the gorgeous results – at one point, 30 workers were busily installing drywall, painting, hanging, tiling, and wiring – all at once. The furniture and decor was moved into the home with just 3 days to spare.

Head over to Apartment Therapy or Paltrow’s site to check out the results – they’re undeniably gorgeous, but one has to wonder at the wisdom of building an entire home from the ground up just for a temporary stay. Aren’t there any 5 star hotels in Nashville?
