Nice Day for a White Castle Wedding

whitecastleFile this one away in wedding news of the weird! Several couples around the country got married on Valentine’s Day in that most romantic of wedding locations, White Castle.

The fine purveyor of tiny hamburgers ran a contest open to couples all around the company. Winners had the whole wedding shebang provided to them: dress, rings, tux, and of course a vast selection of sliders, chicken fingers, and fries.

Two of the White Castle newlyweds were a Newark, New Jersey couple who have been engaged since 2006 but could never seem to find the time to make the wedding happen. The bride told press outlets, “I am thrilled to be marrying the love of my life. I would marry him anywhere.” (admit it: that’s a little aww.) For a glimpse of their White Castle happy future, they need only to look to the couple in St. Louis who renewed their wedding vows at their local franchise on the same day–because they’ve spent every Valentine’s Day at a White Castle for the 33 years they’ve been married.

I’d definitely rather go to a wedding at a place like White Castle, especially one that reflects the couple’s personality, than a generic wedding. Plus, burgers. Way more people should incorporate burgers into their weddings. So, good luck to the White Castle couples!

Breaking News: Groundhog Sees His Shadow!

2010-02-02t135606z_01_btre61112rg00_rtroptp_3_usa_hmediumFor those of you who were hoping to break out the breezy tanks and sundresses by the end of this month (or…at least put away the scarf and glove collection that threatens to overwhelm your closet and switch to lighter jackets) I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have to.

Punxsutawney Phil, that terrible tease of a rodent, saw his shadow this morning…and that means winter will last for 6 more weeks.  But look on the bright side! Here’s an excuse to pick up another winter coat. With 6 more weeks, you basically have to.

Livening Up the Daily Commute

new-york-city-subway-1

If you live in a major American city, you might have noticed something a bit bizarre on public transportation yesterday–for instance, your fellow travelers riding without their pants.

In a stunt first conceived and implemented by Improv Everywhere in 2002, the No Pants Subway Ride is in its ninth year and has spread from its original locus in New York City to other American cities like Boston and San Francisco. Yesterday, participants met up at various locations around their given cities and rode public transportation together–with the idea that there’s safety in numbers when riding in your long johns. Participants were under strict instructions not to behave lewdly and certainly not to giggle or let on that anything was abnormal about their riding attire.

In New York, riders were given pamphlets by “pro-” and “anti-pants” lobbying committees, adding a further touch of levity to an event that wasn’t exactly lacking it in to begin with.

If you’re thinking it doesn’t sound like there’s much point to the exercise, that sort of was the point. Improv Everywhere seeks to cause ”scenes of chaos and joy in public places.” They estimate they had about 3000 participants in New York alone.

Did you see the event in a city near you? What’s the most chaotic/joyful thing you’ve seen during your commute?
