Chisel, Contour, Lift: Non-Surgical Nip-Tucks at Smooth Synergy

Is your chin trying to land a role in a Doublemint Gum commercial? Did someone tell your mother she has your arms? Do you have hate handles (why they’re called love handles, I’ll never know)? Meet your new spa BFF, Smooth Synergy Spa in New York City, a spa on the cutting edge of spa technology when it comes to toning, lifting, firming and shaping any of your less-than-satisfactory body parts. Miley Cyrus went there for a spray tan once—I’m sure once that girl sees her first body part that can’t be tamed, she’ll be back in a heart beat (for love).

I’ve been exploring two of Smooth Synergy’s signature body-contouring treatments: The LipoMassage by Endermologie, using their brand new Integral machine, and a Microcurrent Facelift, or what I like to call a chin-chiseling mission, one of their tried and true treatments. Let’s take them one at a time.

First: The Lipomassage by Endermologie

This treatment uses various massaging wands to tone and lift the skin on your body. It also serves to get your circulation pumping and release toxins. I only did one treatment of this so I can’t tell you personally that I dropped 4 inches (sigh), but I will tell you that I did feel ever-so-slightly slimmer walking out of there. They have clients who come and do this treatment once or twice a week and see phenomenal results. Check out the video for all the details. They are offering this treatment for Spa Week for $50 April 11-7, so if you’re interested, this would be a great time to check it out.

Next: the Microcurrent Facelift

This treatment I did for 5 sessions, so I can tell you with confidence: I absolutely saw a difference. I chose to do this treatment because a highly defined jawline has always been on the top of my wishlist; I feel it is one of those features that instantly makes one look 10 times better. And by one, I mean me.

Microcurrent Chin Chiseling

The treatment works as such: First, they put a layer of chocolate mousse on your face. This is not a joke. It’s the spa version so don’t eat it, but breathe in because it smells delicious and might curb your cravings. Next, currents (micro though they may be) are quite literally rolled onto your face with a metal rolling device that is hooked up to a machine that looks a little like a  small airplane’s cockpit. There are buttons and levers and about 102 colored wires coming out of it, and one of them connects to the device that rolls onto your face, and one of them connects to the device that rests on your shoulder like the “other side of the battery”—it has to charge you from two points to work.

Michele Fleites was my esthetician, and she is fantastic. You know why? Because I could actually feel her sculpting out my chin and cheekbones, pressing harder and deeper into those sweet spots that would give my face an optimal chisel. It is a very strange sensation, I’m not going to lie. If you didn’t know what was going on, you might think there was a mini power drill lodged in your gums. The currents can be turned up or down, and the higher it was the better it performed, but that also meant it got more sensitive. Michele was great at pushing me to the brink of my sensitivity threshold so that I’d get the most out of each hour-long session.

Digging deep into the cheekbones

After both sides of my face were complete with two different types of currents, the chocolate mousse was wiped off and replaced with a skin moisturizer to go. The results? A slightly leaner face. A slightly more defined jawline. A few people noticed, which I didn’t expect. Immediately after each treatment was when I noticed the difference most each time, and I started to see changes after the 2nd treatment. I definitely don’t look like Mila Kunis, but I’m pretty excited to see any improvement at all.

NOTE: I did take before and after pictures, but I don’t think they do a good job of showing the difference because I didn’t get the angles exact. Anyone can fudge before and after pictures, by the way– just change the angle! So you’ll just have to trust me.

Microcurrent, as described by Smooth Synergy: This breakthrough approach to non-invasive skin care uses advanced wave forms that work with the body’s own biological currents to put the face through a premium “workout” to lift and tone the muscles.   The Diamond Dynamic Wave Form Therapy Program amplifies the skin’s own rejuvenating abilities to strengthen the muscles and bring youthful definition to the face.  Sagging skin, poor color (especially around the eyes), acne and enlarged pores are some of the problems that show in the face. However, these are just the apparent signs. Internal clogging is the more serious problem that can be so detrimental to our overall health and well being. When the internal organs of the body are sluggish, the result is a continuing back up that can result in tired, older-looking skin.  Enlisting the body’s support and cooperation is essential to help reverse the signs of aging. This system gently and effectively works to bring the face back to optimal youthfulness and vitality.

SPA WEEK DAILY DEAL: This Microcurrent Facelift is not one of their Spa Week treatments, but if you’d like to give it a shot, tell them I sent you and they will give you half off ($100 instead of $200) for your first session if you get it with their Spa Week facial—and they’ll extend the offer for anytime in April. Give it a go!

Sara’s Endermologie

“Endermologie, The Cellulite Solution: …Reshape thighs, buttocks & stomach bulges….Great after pregnancy or liposuction….Eliminate cellulite…Improved pain & circulation…”

The great thing about Spa Week is that it’s the best time to give a spa treatment you’re unfamiliar with a test drive. Botox can run upwards of $400 a session but during Spa Week it’s only $50. Celebrity eyelash extension gurus can charge almost $100 per lash but during Spa Week it’s only $50 (for all of them). Then there is Endermolgie, a treatment you may have read about or watched it on Live Spa TV, but never tried, and it’s only $50.

Over the weekend I took a ride out to Queens, NY to visit Sara’s Endermologie to get the scoop for myself. Sara has been in business since 1991, and her customers keep coming back. Endermologie is performed with a machine that is essentially a suction device that rolls your skin in different directions to create an ideal image. The key to the service lies within the practitioner. Sara, has worked with so many bodies over the years she can just look at you and see what area needs to be worked on. To start, she puts you in an all-white nylon body suit that serves as a protector against the machine. She rotates your body beginning flat and attacks areas of cellulite from the stomach, the thighs, butt and any other area in need of work. She tested out the machine gently on my thigh and it was painless, in fact it felt like a massage.

On the way out, I met one of Sara’s clients whose been coming to her for 10 years, and who just happened to be a professional model. If that’s not promising, I don’t know what is. After meeting her and looking through Sara’s enormous successful client book, it is apparent that for a tighter and a slimmer figure this is surely a way to go. I would recommend Endermologie for someone looking to go on a bikini baring vacation, or just wanting to look and feel better in a dress. At this point if your curiosity hasn’t piqued, she is offering an introductory free session to go on top of the $50 Spa Week treatment.

I wasn’t kidding when I said in the Spa Crawl Video to take advantage and TRY AS MANY $50 SPA TREATMENTS AS POSSIBLE DURING SPA WEEK®. Well, how hypocritical I would be if I didn’t go through with it myself? In the spirit of wellness, relaxation, overindulgence and experimentation, for each of the 7 days of Spa Week, Monday April 12th through Sunday April 18th, I tried out and live-broadcasted an unusual spa treatment from one of our nearly 800 spas.

From a Caviar Facial to Colon Hydrotherapy to Botox to Vajazzling… my Spa Week got a little crazy.

Why? It’s all in the name of bringing the spa lifestyle to real life, answering your questions, and making you fully aware of what to expect inside any treatment. Banish the fear of awkward or intimidating situations at the spa by getting acquainted with the process beforehand.

Click the links below each treatment; there’s been absolutely NO EDITING. Learn, live vicariously, and then go experience it for yourself!

Beating The 3 Levels of Cellulite – Endermologie in Action

cellulite_2

One thing all women have in common is that if we don’t hate our cellulite, we dread the day it will arrive. My appointment at the American Cellulite Reduction Center (ACRC) was extremely informative on the topic of cellulite—most disappointingly of all, I learned that I had some.

There are 3 levels of cellulite (fast forward to 5:30 of 1st video for the full explanation):

LEVEL 1 – Cellu-LITE. If you have to pinch your skin to see the dimpling, you are a Level 1.

LEVEL 2 – Can you hear me now? Yes, because your cell is in service… and you can see dimpling–to some degree–when you’re standing up.

LEVEL 3 – Don’t take this one laying down. Because Level 3 cellulite is visible even in the most flattering beach position of them all… laying down flat.

Luckily, there are ways to reverse the process no matter which stage you’re in, but the sooner you catch it, the easier it will be. One of the ways involves slipping into a giant body stocking for a treatment called Endermologie.

THE TREATMENT:

It ain’t easy being cottage cheesy… but it turns out Endermologie actually feels good! No pain whatsoever, which Shira says is the #1 misconception. Many women actually like it so much that they develop addictions.
Side note: I am not cottage cheesy. Just had to put that out there.

What is Endermologie actually doing to your body? The rollers in the “wand” grab onto the skin, with a little bit of suction, and in the most basic terms, it gets your blood circulating. The #1 and #2 causes of cellulite are water retention and poor blood circulation. Endermologie gets the blood going on the surface (there’s a diagram and classroom-style explanation, 21:30 of the 1st video), and the sensation is like a cool rush of energy just under the skin.

According to Shira, the spa director at ACRC who performed my treatment, when you get a regular massage, they get your blood circulating about 60%. During Endermologie, they can get it circulating 200-600% every single time. Also, if it hurts, it doesn’t mean it works better.

I live-streamed my (very insightful!) Endermologie session so that you wouldn’t miss a thing if you’re considering the treatment for yourself. Shira has had some of the same clients for 8 years. She treats actresses, models, and many women who depend on this treatment to keep them looking taut and feeling like the best version of themselves.

Madonna (who we can arguably agree has one of the best bodies ever) has made it a priority to be totally dimple-free. According to the Daily Mail, the pop icon just purchased a cellulite erasing machine for $75,000. Tisk, Tisk. If only she would have read about Spa Week.

The American Cellulite Reduction Center has joined Spa Week this season to present two cellulite obliterating treatments: the 45 Min One Area Cellulite Reduction with Velashape (see the Velashape video for more on that) and A Full Session Cellulite Reduction with Endermologie– for $50 per session. There is no result after one session. It takes 5-10 sessions to do an effective Velashape and 20-30 for Endermologie, but Spa Week is a great way to try it out on the cheap to see if you’d like to possibly the full package.

The ACRC is actually ENTIRELY book up for Spa Week, but there are a host of others in the Spa Directory who want to smooth your cellulite too.
