Winter Essentials: 14 Beauty Bloggers’ Top Moisturizing Picks

“Dry”
“Very dry”
“Dry and itchy”
“Dry and ashy”
“Drier than toast”
“Fatter and dryer”
“Cold!”

Yikes! These were YOUR responses to our Facebook/Twitter fill in the blank on Monday:

“In the winter, my skin gets _________.”

Oh, winter, why must you be so harsh? What did our skin ever do to you?  The winter’s pretty, but when it comes to our pretty faces, we are always desperately seeking the cure. So, after you indulge in your winter-ready facial, the key is to have the best possible face and body moisturizing  products in your beauty arsenal to shield against the wind, the snow and the frigid cold. (Unless you’re down south, in which case we don’t want to hear a word from your lucky, ne’er-frostbitten self.)

Bloggers get to play with all the latest products, so to get the scoop on the best moisturizers on the market for the 2011-2012 season of freezing your tuchas off, we asked some of our favorite beauty bloggers:

What face and body moisturizers will you be using this winter, and why?

Sarah from Beauty Banter says:

Face: I am eternally loyal to Amore Pacific’s Moisture Bound Vitalizing Creme. Come winter – it is hydrating without being greasy and leaves my skin looking so healthy.

Body: It’s always changing but one of my favorite body lotions for the season is Level Naturals Body Butter. It’s a delicious shea butter concoction that is ultra moisturizing for even the harshest days of winter. Currently using the grapefruit bergamot but lusting over the lavender chamomile as well.

Jessica of Beauty Woo Me recommends:

Face: Mario Badescu Control Cream and Sophyto Multivitamin Facial Serum.

Body: Coconut oil, Weleda Calendua Oil and Emma Hardie Amazing Face Rejuvenating Cream. Yes, I use it on my body! All amazing. I have hideously sensitive, easily reddened, rosacea-prone, acne-prone, perpetually superficially dehydrated skin and these all work miracles for me!

Jamie from The Beauty of Life Blog loves:

Face: I’ve been in love with Lierac Creme Mesolift for YEARS. It’s hydrating and extremely moisturizing, which is great when falling temperatures wreak havoc on my skin.

Body: I’ve actually been using Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel! It’s done wonders for my ashy legs and parched, raw elbows.

Romy Raves about:

Face: The Serum & Shea Cream by Elizabeth Dehn. This is my dry winter skin fighting dynamic duo created by a fabulous beauty blogging sista! First, I apply one pump of the super-potent lightweight serum that contains a luxurious blend of plant oils and essential fatty acids that restore and rejuvenate my skin, then I follow it up with this yummy rich velvety soft cream that moisturizes and replenishes my parched skin.

Body: Votre Vu SnapDragon Crème. I adore this yummy tropical smoothie scented antioxidant-rich citrus body crème because it wonderfully hydrates my dehydrated winter skin and it’s infused with fabulous anti-aging ingredients.

Amber the Beauty Blogging Junkie recommends:

Face: I love 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Tinted Moisturizer. It’s the only moisturizer that provides light coverage without clogging my pores and it comes in my exact vampire skin tone shade. Love.

Body: Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Body Lotion is a bargain, fragrance and preservative free and deflakes my sensitive skin like a dream.

Alexis of The Beauty Bean enjoys:

Face: I am using Estee Lauder’s Re-Nutriv on my face. It’s expensive, but WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY. It makes my skin soft and supple, prevents seasonal dryness and pretty much makes me feel like I’m seriously pampering myself every time I put it on. It’s luxury to the extreme.

Body: I’m using Eucerin Everday Body Lotion SPF 15 on my body – because just because it’s cold out, doesn’t mean you don’t need SPF! I especially love this one because it goes on smoothly like a regular lotion and doesn’t smell like sunscreen. And since melanoma runs in my family, I’m pretty much sun-phobic!

Chrissy from She Knows knows what she loves:

Face: I’m loving First Aid Beauty’s 5 In 1 Face Cream/SPF 30 this winter! I never go without SPF but some SPF moisturizers can be a little harsh on my acne-prone skin, so I love that the light, non-greasy feel of this moisturizer and the fact that it’s formulated without parabens or other harsh chemicals!

Body: I’ve been digging Avalon Organics’s Lemon Hand & Body Lotion since the summer and plan to use it throughout the winter! The light scent reminds me of summer but this is one moisturizer that is great for dry winter skin too.

Danielle the Style & Beauty Doctor says:

Face: Since it looks like winter won’t be as harsh this year, I may use my year-round moisturizer Perricone M.D. Face Finishing Moisturizer. It contains Vitamin C Ester, DMAE, and Alpha Lipoic Acid, is great for moisturizing the skin without feeling heavy, and leaves my skin with a soft radiance. If winter does turn out to be a little harsh, I’ll use Perricone M.D. Hypoallergenic Nourishing Moisturizer made with olive polyphenols for deep hydration and super soft skin.

Body: For my body, I’ll be using LUSH Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner. It’s like the perfect medium between a lotion and a body butter, gets the skin hydrated without feeling greasy, and smells INCREDIBLE.

Laurie of Product Girl enjoys:

Face: I’m relying on the multi-tasking genius of One Love Organics Skin Savior Balm. It’s a waterless balm made with cold-pressed plant oils, vitamin E, vanilla extract and chia extract –smells delicious and a total treat for my face.

Body: I’m all about J.R. Watkins Naturals Grapefruit Body Oil Mist. The spray nozzle makes this the easiest body oil in the world to apply and the subtle grapefruit scent is a perfect twist to your typical citrus! And it’s only $9!

PJ, the Senior Editor of Style + Beauty at Betty Confidential, says:

Face: This winter I’m using Elizabeth Grant Vitamin C Day Treatment ($40) for day and night. Well, until the bottle runs out, then I might try something else. Check out Michelle’s recent post on her obsession with Elizabeth Grant’s Vitamin C line.

Body: I’m pretty bad about this as I’m not consistent and I know that you really need a body moisturizer for the winter time. The closest that comes to a body lotion for me (right now anyway) is the Avon Moisture Therapy hand cream ($5). It’s amazing! It immediately makes my hands soft and happy, not dry or chapped.

Mildred of Beauty Logic Blog enjoys using:

Face: Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizer. I love that this leaves my super sensitive skin incredibly hydrated, but doesn’t break me out at all.

Body: Caudalie Vine Body Butter. This contains grape seed and shea butter which leave my dry winter skin feeling so moisturized and silky and I love the light citrus scent as well.

And now from your *favorite* bloggers of all…
the 3 of us here at Spa Week Daily!

Michelle recommends:

Face: My moisturizers are on rotation and I’m always trying something new! A few weeks ago I started on Sebamed’s Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin and I love how light yet protective it is at the same time. Great price too.

Body: Since 2002 I’ve been addicted to Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lotion, and this winter will be no different. It’s inexpensive and keeps my skin soft and smooth, and a decade’s worth of friends think of me every time they smell it.

Stephanie likes:

Face: I have been using Neutrogena’s Healthy Defense Daily Tinted Moisturizer since high school and I love it! The tint helps add that soft glow back into peachy completions like mine.  Plus, it has SPF 30 which protects me from sun damage and free radicals which can make you look older and harm your skin, even during the winter!

Body: This Eucerin Calming Itch-Relief body lotion is an Analgesic (pain/itch numb-er) which instantly stops itchy and flaky skin with a soothing combo of menthol and a moisturizing oatmeal formula. This cream is perfect because it’s non-irritating, fragrance free and great to slather on right before bed after a nice warm shower.

Kimberlee uses:

Face: I typically use Cetaphil’s daily moisturizer but really had to step it up for these cold East Coast winters. Benefit’s Total Moisture Cream has been working wonderfully for my sensitive skin.

Body: I have trusted Clinique’s Body Butter for so many years – wish I could buy it in bulk!

Spa Foodie: Honey-Ginger Baked Salmon

Need a new recipe for all that salmon you’ll be eating in Dr. Perricone’s Eat for Beauty Spa Week Daily Challenge? Michelle gave her super-easy salmon recipe here… but just to make sure you’ve got salmon plans throughout, here’s another simple delish recipe (using a few extra ingredients) to help you get soft sexy skin – and hair too. Deck your salmon out with a sweet and salty taste by swapping salt and sugar for soy sauce and honey. Plus get the added benefits of onion, ginger and Vitamin C from the OJ!

Recipe Serves 4 (even though you probably won’t find 3 more people who will the Challenge with you at the same time).

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1 (1 1/2-pound) salmon fillet

Directions

  1. In a large self-closing plastic bag, combine ginger, garlic, soy sauce, orange juice, honey, and green onion; mix well.
  2. Place salmon in bag and seal tightly. Turn bag gently to distribute marinade.
  3. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes. (If you have time, marinate overnight!)
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  5. Remove salmon from marinade, shake off excess.
  6. Bake for 4 to 5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook an additional 4 to 5 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Reduce leftover marinade on a stove top for 8 to 10 minutes to create a thicker, tasty sauce.
  8. Spoon sauce on fillet and decorate with chopped green onions.

Who says?

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, expert dermatologist and author of Forever Young

A word from Dr. Perricone to Spa Week Daily readers: One of the cornerstones of my philosophy is “beauty from the inside out.” What this means is that what we put in our bodies will make our skin and overall appearance more healthy and radiant. While topicals can do wonders it is critical to not forget the dietary component.  Make sure that you have adequate intake of healthy fats such as those found in salmon and extra virgin olive oil, as well as fruits such as berries and veggies – my favorite is watercress.  Also, include high quality protein and drink plenty of pure spring water to get skin glowing. Enjoy my 3 day skincare diet!

What’s in it for me?

Besides learning the benefits that food can have on your skin and feeling that rush of confidence when your skin looks its best, join the Dr. Perricone 3-Day Skincare Diet Event on Facebook and share your success story or struggle. Once you RSVP and start sharing, you are automatically entered to win one of two $50 SpaWeek Gift Cards.

Eat For Beauty: Dr. Perricone’s 3 Day Skin Care Diet

I’ve concluded that the only reason we human beings need skin care is because we eat crap.

What!? Okay, before I cut to the conclusion, let’s rewind to one of the best facials of my life: by Estella at the Perricone MD Flagship Store and skincare spa in New York City, a glistening Upper East Side skin care mecca created by beloved skin expert and author Dr. Nicholas Perricone. Estella has been named by our partner Allure Magazine as one of the top 10 estheticians in America—she even used to do Dr. Perricone’s facials! After she cleansed out every last pore on my face with deep yet delicate extractions followed by an Intraceuticals oxygen infusion, my skin was positively radiant, and it lasted for days and days—every blemish soothed, every surface smoothed. She didn’t even leave any redness! Needless to say, I was going to listen to anything she told me.

Estella instructed me to try Dr. Perricone’s 3 Day Skin Care Diet before my next important event—it’s a strict anti-inflammatory regimen that is proven to give dramatic, immediate results of bright, clear, firm, glowing skin. She said all her brides do it, and it works every time! So, right before hosting the red carpet for the Spa Week Media Party, I did exactly that. And now, I’m leaving on Friday for a 10-day vacay in LA/Santa Monica (woohoo!) feeling less than luminous, so this morning I started it again for a second time. I already am seeing a difference in 12 hours. It’s truly incredible and I’m SO excited to share this with you!

Why the 3-Day Dr. Perricone Diet?

The diet is very restrictive, but for only 3 days anything’s possible, right? All your menu items are delicious, so actually, you should be excited to start. For 3 days you will be eating only specific foods rich in anti-oxidants and specific fatty acids; these foods aren’t just “not bad for your skin” – they are all tremendously good for it. The diet will control inflammation and fluid retention with foods containing DMAE, astaxanthin, and essential fatty acids that increase skin’s radiance, glow, and firmness. Best of all, it’s extremely easy to get started because your shopping list is outlined for you:

Dr. Perricone 3 Day Diet Shopping List

For the main course (breakfast, lunch, or dinner):

  • 1 dozen fresh eggs.
  • Old-fashioned oatmeal. (Instant oatmeal will rapidly raise your blood sugar, triggering a burst of inflammation.)
  • 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 pounds of fresh salmon minimum, cut into 6 portions.
  • 8 ounces of thinly sliced, low-salt turkey or chicken breast.
  • 1 can of sardines packed in olive oil, or 1 can of low-sodium tuna packed in water. I don’t like either, so I skipped this

Low-glycemic fruits:

  • 2 ripe cantaloupes
  • 1 pint of strawberries
  • 1 pint of blueberries
  • 1/2 pint of raspberries
  • 1/2 pint of blackberries
  • 3 green (e.g. Granny Smith) apples
  • 2 pears or an additional 2 green apples
  • 2 lemons

Green vegetables:

  • 1 pound of asparagus
  • 1 pound of broccoli
  • 1 pound of fresh spinach Try baby organic spinach (pre-washed for super-ease). Read about the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 for a guide on which fruits and veggies to always buy organic.
  • 2 heads of romaine lettuce

Good sources of healthy fats:

  • Olives, fresh or canned
  • Raw, unsalted almonds I’m allergic to raw nuts, so although you see roasted nuts pictured above, I ended up not eating them to remain strict.
  • Hazelnuts
  • Macadamia nuts
  • 8-ounce bottle of extra virgin olive oil My savior for the week, and the best ingredient on Earth! Read about how to taste olive oil - from my trip to Tuscany.

Others not mentioned:

  • Plain, all natural yogurt This is not on his official shopping list, but it’s on his sample menu, so I’m adding it. Greek Yogurt is my preference.
  • Tea Tea is always good—try green tea or ginger tea, 2 of the most anti-inflammatory ones

Finally, 3 or 4 gallons of spring water. The Dr Perricone 3 Day Diet calls for six 8- to 12-ounce servings of water and an additional 2 glasses of water minimum throughout the day. Try keeping fresh water at your desk at work and in your car.

My Top 2 Go-To Meals

Sunnyside up eggs and satueed spinach for breakfast. Ever since this diet I’ve been having this at least 3 mornings a week. Pour about a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil onto an oversized pan – if anyone tells you to use PAM, they are sorely mislead. Crack the eggs, and then place the spinach on the other side of the pan. Toss them around in the olive oil to grease them up good, maybe pour on some more EVOO, then sprinkle salt and pepper and then let them cook till they get stuck to the pan, crispy and brown. This will be your “bread” to soak up the yummy oozy yolk.

Salmon, salmon, salmon. I made so much salmon! The only additions this most versatile fish needs is a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper and 12 minutes in the oven on 350 (I like it a bit undercooked). I also love it encrusted in Eden Organic brand’s Seaweed Gomasio, which I discovered recently at a luncheon with Pooja Mottl. It’s a mixture of Sesame Seeds, Seaweed and Sea Salt and adds hearty, seedy flavor to salmon, asparagus, salads and pretty much anything—it’s a healthier alternative to salt. Roll your salmon in olive oil, add the Gomasio, some black pepper (and extra sesame seeds if you like them as much as I do), stick it on a tray with some asparagus (here I used white asparagus), put it on a bed of baby spinach tossed with EVOO, balsamic vinegar, a spritz of lemon and Gomasio, and make yourself a dish that looks like this (my lunch today):

The best part: The Results

When you eat good-for-you food, your body truly knows how to kiss you and thank you for it. I couldn’t believe the results! Over the 3 days, blemishy redness in my skin began to go away, and a beautifully rich, smooth texture and bronzed hue surfaced. Pimples pending under the surface retracted rather than sprouting, my pores appeared to shrink, and I beamed with an A-list  dewy glow. Beyond just my skin looking its best… I dropped a few pounds, I de-bloated and trimmed down both in my body and face, and I felt an amazing, noticeable rush of superwoman energy.

When I went in to get my makeup done for the Spa Week event, 3 hardboiled eggs in hand, my makeup artist Lysette immediately noticed a WOW difference in my skin. Usually there are a few things to cover up and she occasionally uses her airbrush when it’s real bad, but today she was working on a smooth, clear canvas.

This is me at the event with makeup, but believe me, without makeup my skin was just as clear.

Conclusion? I seriously do think that if everyone followed this diet all the time, we wouldn’t need all these toners and moisturizers and skin products. Our bodies would regulate and keep our skin hydrated and healthy from the inside out. But because we are human beings who love sodium in our turkey breast and high glycemic fruits like bananas and bread and cheese and birthday cake… we have to care for our skin from the outside too.

After the 3 days were up, I transitioned slowly back to normal eating, however I couldn’t say goodbye to these results just yet! I kept the foundations of the Dr. Perricone Diet in my every day routine. I load up on salmon and try to eat it every day. I continue to eat lots of berries, pears, melon, eggs, spinach, olives and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and while doing this after the diet, my skin stayed gleaming for another week and a half.

And here’s the clincher: The very next time I had pizza, I immediately got a pimple. Dairy can indeed lead to skin problems, but come ON! Did it have to be so dramatic?

Please give this diet a try next time you have an event coming up, and let me know what you think! I would love to hear from you, before, after or during… if you have any questions, rants or raves – get me anytime at michelle at spaweekmedia dot com.

Dr. Perricone also has a not-as-strict 28-Day Fresh Start Challenge diet for a longer-term diet plan on your quest to eat for beauty.
