Spa Foodie: 2 Delish Winter-Ready DIY Body Scrubs

We <3 our readers! The other day on Facebook we asked what your winter-ready skin secret is, and Krysten Walker chimed in that she makes her own scrub recipes. Fun – so do we – and we had to get on our hands on them! Krysten was kind enough to share, and it just so happens she is an esthetician who does a lot of home spa parties. She said that it’s common at parties for people to not want facials, so she prepares hand scrubs and parfaffin dips as well. ”I find that mostly everyone who does this ends up buying a jar of my scrub,” she says. She SWEARS by these recipes to help her skin survive the winter.  Not a master spa chef? No worries, these recipes only require you to mix the ingredients.

And here’s something interesting Krysten shares: “People who are diabetic cannot use a sugar scrub and people who have high blood pressure can not use a salt scrub, so always feel free to substitute sugar for salt and vice versa.”

Get your pens and paper ready! Wait, does anyone still use pens and paper?

Spa Deluxe Simple Sugar Scrub

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup sugar, or sea salt
  • 3/4 grapeseed, coconut, almond or olive oil.
  • 1/4 tsp essential oils or fragrance oils (peppermint is great holiday scent)
  • 1/2 tbsp of Vitamin E oil

Mix all the ingredients. Feel free to add more or less based on your preference. Store in a tightly closed jar. Follow up with a good lotion to seal the moisture in your skin.

Spa Deluxe Mocha Latte Scrub

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup coffee grounds
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup grapeseed oil
  • 1/2 tbsp Vitamin E

Coffee grounds are said to help with reduction of cellulite and chocolate is high in antioxidants. Store in a tight container and this will last you about 3 months.

Bonus tip: Store them in mason jars and give them as gifts this holiday season!

Spa Foodie: DIY Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Scrub

Last night I officially became a spa chef! I Bobby Flay’d it up in my kitchen with my favorite flavor of the season – pumpkin. I am a pumpkin fanatic. Nothing says fall like pumpkins to me. Childhood memories of carving silly faces. But, I especially love the smell.  The power of pumpkin doesn’t stop there – they can be very beneficial to human skin. I embarked on a journey creating the perfect at-home pumpkin body scrub recipe using all ingredients that are good for your skin. Most of them you’ll already have if you’re in the fall baking mood. I just had to buy the pumpkin puree which only costs around $3.

Why these ingredients? Pumpkin is full of Vitamin A, C and zinc. Honey is an amazing product for your skin because it is an antibacterial, hydrates and smooths your skin as well as provides anti-aging antioxidants. Cinnamon is a natural astringent. Brown sugar helps minimize pores. After some experimentation, I reached the perfect measurements:

1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 cup granulated brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp honey

Don’t be alarmed that the brown sugar or cinnamon will turn your pumpkin a darker color. Feel free to play with the amount of sugar for the right amount of scrub you want. I like a good scrub so I added some white granulated sugar to enhance the texture.

Warning: While you may be tempted to eat it, I warn you it is very sweet! Best to just leave it for your skin to enjoy.

I did my usual shower routine but instead of body wash I used my new pumpkin scrub. My bathroom smelled delicious! When I got out of the shower my skin felt like a baby’s bottom. I was very impressed by the softness. This scrub is great for getting rid of dead, dry skin.

Pumpkin is chock full of vitamins and is a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants to help your skin achieve a healthy glow throughout the season. I suffer from dry skin during these brutal New York winters so I’ll definitely be using this again.  I say don’t limit this recipe to just your body. You can add more honey to create a moisturizing face mask.

Yum!

Spa Foodie: Mochaccino Cellulite Booty Scrub

Guest column by: The Chefanies

Brighten, tighten, and awaken your skin with this breakfast-inspired Fanny Facial scrub. Now of course you can use this scrub on your whole body, but with that summer vacation coming right up, I thought a little tushy toner was right is oh so many ways.

The coffee in this scrub is the main cellulite buster, as caffeine increases fat metabolism. By applying it topically, the coffee absorbs and removes that excess fat and liquid that has been hiding in your skin. It can also help prevent and diminish the problem of varicose veins.

The oatmeal is a great exfoliant for people of all skin types. A touch of milk provides moisturizing benefits. Cocoa contains fatty acids to help your skin stay nourished.

You kitchen is on your side after all… cellulite begone!

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup Coffee Grinds
1/4 cup of Brown Sugar
1/4 cup of Oatmeal
1/4 cup of Olive Oil (or enough to moisten your mixture)
2 TBS Unsweetened Cocoa
2 TBS Salt
2 TBS Milk

DIRECTIONS
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together until at desired consistency. Add more coffee grinds or olive oil to make it more or less moist.

Put your mixture in a Tupperware and head to the shower. After your body is wet, rub in circular motion around your bum and thighs for 1-2 minutes. Sstep away from the water or turn it off for a minute while doing so. Then rinse. It’s mild enough to use every day.

BONUS – Get the pro spa service: The Center for Pain Relief & Wellness in Babylon, NY is offering a 60 Min Anti-Oxidant Anti-Cellulite Mint Coffee Scrub for only $65 as part of our May spa deals.
