The Skinny on Colonics – Coffee and Chlorophyll up the Booty! (VIDEO)

Eggnog, gingerbread men, Hanukkah gelt, seven-course meals… regardless of holiday parties and vacations and pictures for which you’d prefer to not be at your most bloated state, it’s a naughty season. Yes, and this is why Holiday Season is also the season when curious spa-goers call up their local holistic health centers and wonder:

“‘Tis this season for a colonic?”

Such is the case at Fabylous Living in Chelsea, NYC (which you may remember from my ear candling experience) – owner Fabiola Turner’s phone has been ringing off the hook about colonics. What’s it like? Should I be afraid? Will it help me not gain 400 pounds this December? So she picked up the phone and called me - to come in and film so we can show people once and for all what this colonic biz-nass is all about. At Faby’s spa, it’s not just a colonic, but a full pampering experience. It includes massages, hot towels, vibrational therapy, aromatherapy… and – the kicker! – it even includes a coffee and a chlorphyll enema.

The idea behind a colonic is that food enters the intestine and a lot of it doesn’t get flushed out, causing toxins to accumulate, which can result in illness. Especially in today’s world, where we’re breathing polluted air and consuming pesticides, our bodies are overwhelmed trying to get rid of it all. So a little “push” now and then really helps the digestive system do its job better.

Although some believe a colonic is not necessary or even risky, I’ve done three with great results… so call me a believer! But before you bare your butt, you probably want to know:

First, how does one prepare? Here’s how to prepare for a colonic.

Then, what exactly are those benefits?

THE BENEFITS OF A COLONIC:

First and foremost… the reason I personally love it… That SKINNY FEELING! It’s like, the greatest bowel movement ever X 100, and sometimes it’s exactly what a girl needs. I once did a colonic specifically to de-puff before an event in a tight dress, and it really does wonders as an immediate de-bloater. Also, cleaning your colon can help your body modify its appetite, aiding in long term weight management.

A boost of energy. Colonics allow the nutrients and vitamins to be properly absorbed into the body again. Although sometimes immediately after I’ve heard that many people feel a bit fatigued, all three times I’ve done it I’ve felt energized. Ready to run a mile! Well, maybe a half mile.

Your colon could use some exercise. As Fabiola puts it, if you have a sluggish colon (AKA are constipated often), a colonic gets the muscles moving, making your colon stronger and more effective.

Boosting your immune system. It is believed that a clean colon helps your body fight disease, because instead of focusing on expelling built up toxins in the colon, it fights toxins elsewhere.

Now… you may be wondering about those other liquids that were flushed up into my intestine:

COFFEE AND CHLOROPHYLL ENEMAS

WHY A COFFEE ENEMA? Coffee is known for its many antioxidants, which helps benefit the health of your liver. Caffeine also stimulates your gallbladder to release toxic bile. Here’s a good medical explanation, if you’re looking for more detail.

WHY A CHLOROPHYLL ENEMA? The green stuff in plants is great for rehydrating the body and soothing the intestinal lining. It removes toxins and is effective in alkalizing your system when it’s too acidic.

So, there you have it. So, after watching the video, do you think you’ll try a colonic to help you feel slimmer this season?

And if you have any questions, don’t be shy to ask me anything! Either in the comments below or you can email me at michelle(at)spaweekmedia(dot)com – I know it’s a touchy subject and I’d love to help you out. Oh, and also, if 4.5 minutes wasn’t enough, check out this Live Spa TV session I did of  my very first colonic.

VOGUE Supermodel Beverly Johnson on Spa Slimming and Inch Loss

VOGUE 1974, as featured in VOGUE's 2010 September Issue.

The spa skinny from New York Fashion Week: We just got a word with supermodel and actress Beverly Johnson, the first African American to ever appear on the cover of VOGUE, about her thoughts on one of the most popular spa trends right now: slimming down and instant inch loss.

“I’ve tried absolutely everything at the spa,” Beverly said. “I love the slimming wraps. They peel it off and the results are there. Inches melt into the seaweed.”

Sitting front row at Georges Chakra, the 57-year-old who has been named by VOGUE as one of the 10 greatest supermodels of all time, knows things aren’t what they used to be. She looked vibrant and incredibly fit, and she’s not shy to admit that one of her secrets is the spa.

Top 12 Hottest Spa Treatment Trends for Fall 2010

Massages, facials, body scrubs… you can’t get enough! And that’s great. But did you know you’re barely scraping the spa surface? New technology, reinvented techniques and pop culture all shape the way we spa today. Here, Spa Week officially announces the definitive list of the latest in emerging spa treatment trends, from holistic to glamorous.

Treat yourself to a wellness and beauty adventure this Spa Week®, $50 spa treatments September 13-19 for the West Coast and Chicago, October 11-17 for the rest of the country. The Fall spa directory launches August 16 for the West Coast, September 13 for the rest of the country, when you’ll be able to see which spas are offering which services. Try one, try all— Spa Week is the time to indulge and experiment. All these treatments will be available for just $50!

1)      Fighting Allergies

allergy spa treatments

Sinus massages, breathe-easy facials and cold & flu bath salts are just a few of the spa services you’ll be seeing this upcoming Spa Week, just in time to soothe your seasonal allergies. Treat your immune system and clear your sinuses in the spa with new treatments using Eucaplyptus, humidifiers and Lymph drainage movements , to name just few of the techniques being used to assist in allergy relief.

2)      Bikini Glamour

Vajazzling made its sparkly splash last Spa Week, when bedazzling your bikini became the hot new standard in girly glamour. Other treatments are quickly emerging in its footsteps to pamper your private parts: Bikini/Bum Facials are being offered to give the same attention down there as a esthetician would to your face: toner, extractions and masks included. Also, post-Brazilian waxing rituals such as Airbrush painting and Vattooing are now the latest in vaginal adornment.

3)      Sleeping and Dreaming

Insomniac? A good night’s slumber with proper REM cycles can be just as rejuvenating as a spa treatment, so one of the hottest trends emerging in the industry is a dream-worthy mix of the two to promote better sleeping patterns. Scents such as Rosewood, Palmarosa and Vanilla are used to guide you off to never-never land while massage techniques make for a complete relaxation experience.

4)      Lash Extensions

eyelash extensions

Eyelash length, thickness, volume and darkness have gone way up on the beauty priority lists of women now more than ever. While new drugstore and professional lash volumizers continue to crowd the lash-enhancing market, the Fall Spa Week event is poised to give women more professional lash-extending options than ever before.

5)      Instant Inch Loss

skinny tummy

Remember that magical, completely safe instant weight-loss pill you always dreamed of? We’re not saying it’s been invented (sorry), but the spa is becoming a go-to place to get instant, (almost) magic-like results in addition to providing long term benefits. Colon Hydrotherapy is becoming more popular as a quick, easy cleanse, and hot new med-spa services like the 7E Treatment and Ionithermie give immediate results by targeting muscles with waveform technology.

6)      Reiki and Energy Work

reiki

Turn your trip to the spa into a journey for the soul. Reiki, energy work and holistic healing deliver health benefits ranging from injury recovery to spiritual growth. By engaging the flow of your “life force energy,” practitioners are turning spa-goers into active believers. Look for treatments with an energy component this coming Spa Week, and may the force be with you.

7)      Acupuncture

acupuncture

This ancient holistic healing technique is no newbie to the spa scene, but the granddaddy of healing is suddenly making a resurgence. The World Health Organization advocates the use of acupuncture to treat over 40 conditions, from anxiety and other stress syndromes to musculoskeletal pain and injury, and the Fall Spa Week event will encourage more spa-goers to forget their fears of needles and reap the benefits of this treatment—for their face, body and both.

8)      Botox on-the-go

botox injections

Pick up dry cleaning, get Botox, grab lunch… what? Yes, the age-defying treatment has become so mainstream that spas are now offering it hassle-free, and even appointment-free. Add the $50 Spa Week price tag, and suddenly “to-tox-or-not-to tox?” is one of the easiest decisions to make.

9)      Hot AND Cold Stone Massages

Spa Week’s favorite sweetheart treatment has always been the Hot Stone Massage, but the newest twist is cooler than past seasons. Instead of using all hot stones, this treatment includes the application of cold stones as well, adding multi-dimensional stimulation. Alternating the hot and cool stones helps every cell in the body receive more oxygen and nutrients and encourages a more effective removal of toxins.

10)   Champissage

scalp massage Also known as Indian head massage, Champissage has been practiced for more than 1000 years in India and has now been interpreted as a custom ritual at many spas. Traditionally, it began as a system of family grooming, with mothers massaging their daughters’ hair with oils to encourage long, lustrous locks. Over time, it began to incorporate massage of the face neck and shoulders, specifically yours this upcoming Spa Week.

11)   Everything Seaweed

seaweed wrapYou’d like to be… under the sea? Why? Just go to the spa. Seawater and seaweed have similar mineral contents with approximately the same percentage as the human body. Because of this, seaweed wraps help detoxify the body, eliminate excess fluids, increase blood circulation and regulate hormonal levels. More treatments than ever are incorporating Seaweed this Spa Week. Go for a dive.

12)   Simply… Oxygen

Human beings’ star life-sustaining molecule is getting more and more play inside the spa. One of the new treatments is Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy, which dissolves oxygen in the blood plasma and all body cells, tissues and fluids at up to 10 times normal concentration—high enough to sustain life with no blood at all. Oxygenating facials are also increasing in popularity, as oxygen continues to secure its reputation as the #1 skincare essential.

Experiment with these treatments and experience the true spa lifestyle for just $50 a piece during Spa Week. Make sure you’re signed up!

I wasn’t kidding when I said in the Spa Crawl Video to take advantage and TRY AS MANY $50 SPA TREATMENTS AS POSSIBLE DURING SPA WEEK®. Well, how hypocritical I would be if I didn’t go through with it myself? In the spirit of wellness, relaxation, overindulgence and experimentation, for each of the 7 days of Spa Week, Monday April 12th through Sunday April 18th, I tried out and live-broadcasted an unusual spa treatment from one of our nearly 800 spas.

From a Caviar Facial to Colon Hydrotherapy to Botox to Vajazzling… my Spa Week got a little crazy.

Why? It’s all in the name of bringing the spa lifestyle to real life, answering your questions, and making you fully aware of what to expect inside any treatment. Banish the fear of awkward or intimidating situations at the spa by getting acquainted with the process beforehand.

Click the links below each treatment; there’s been absolutely NO EDITING. Learn, live vicariously, and then go experience it for yourself!

How To Prepare for Colon Hydrotherapy

Prep form from Beljanski Wellness Center:

colon hydrotherapy prep

As you know if you checked my Schedule Of Spa Week Appointments, I will be live-streaming my Colon Hydrotherapy, also known as a Colon Cleanse or a Colonic, at Beljanski Wellness Center this morning.

I am not too familiar with the procedure, and am the kind of person who likes learn by doing. I tried to avoid thinking about it… because if I actually thought about the fact that I’m cleansing my colon live on camera, I’d probably change my mind. Which is why, when Beljanski sent me an email last night with the above instructions attached, I started to panic.

Few notes:

1. Of the 14 foods I was supposed to avoid for the past 2 days, I have successfully eaten 13 of them, rice cakes being the lone outlier. When I asked if we should postpone, they told me I’d be fine and to just hydrate and follow the instructions from here on in.

2. I did not get to any of my readings. While my Wednesday nights usually do consist of trips to the NY Public Library engulfed in literature on the human digestion system, it didn’t happen last night.

3. I am entirely confused about the Goat Dairy section. Was this a mistake? Was I supposed to go to Redwood Hill Farms to fetch some goat yogurt? I didn’t ask. I am afraid to. (UPDATE: I asked… and it’s on there because if you’re going to do dairy, goat and sheep dairy is better before a colonic than cow. But, if you can avoid dairy altogether, even better. Alrighty then!)

So now, with about a half hour to go, I have consumed a pint of mango juice between last night and this morning, I’m feeling less than ready. But here we go! (Literally.)

11:15 UPDATE, LIVE FROM BELJANSKI:
We postponed. Not because I’m afraid. It’s because I feel unusually dehydrated and dizzy this morning. Which might be because I’m afraid, but I don’t think so. But the last thing I want to do is pass out with a tube up my butt, live on camera. The Beljanski team has decided it would be best to postpone until tomorrow, Friday, at 10:30 AM. Check back then… I’ll be TOTALLY prepared, and perhaps even make a trip to Red Hill Farms just for fun. Sorry for the delay!

NEXT DAY UPDATE: I did it, I did it!!! Watch the colonic here.
