Zuri Petite Spa In Brooklyn: An Intimate Experience

A while back, we enlisted a “Spa Week Spa Tester” via a contest ran on our Facebook page (25,000 fans and growing, won’t you join us?). The winner had to be a bonafied lover of the spa, have a knack for writing honest reviews and game for the ultimate challenge of sinking into total relaxation at the spa. We sent Janna Meyrowitz Turner to test and review a treatment at Zuri’s Petite Spa in Brooklyn. She says:

Zuri’s Petite Spa is designed to make you feel like you’re simply popping in to see your friend for a treatment. Based in a residential building in the center of Fort Greene, Zuri’s Petite Spa is a second floor oasis where YOU are the center of attention. The oversized bathroom feels like a personal locker room and Zuri’s calming demeanor make you feel instantly at ease. During my massage it was immediately evident that she was tuned in to my muscular needs without my having to tell her where I was tight or where I wanted her to focus.

Zuri prides herself on use of predominantly organic and natural products, and her energy and enthusiasm for the products she carries is evident and genuine. I would recommend Zuri’s Petite Spa for those looking to develop a long term relationship with their neighborhood facialist/masseuse/manicurist because you can tell she genuinely cares about her clients’ health, wellbeing and beauty.

Anti-Aging-turned-Acne Facial at Slope Suds, Brooklyn

Last week I had to pleasure of visiting Park Slope Brooklyn’s, Slope Suds Salon and Spa for a taste of their 60 Min Anti-Aging Regenerative Seaweed Facial. Well, those were my intentions. After a quick 5 minute analysis of my skin, Donata (my facialist) pointed out the oil, dirt and mini mountains of pimples and bumps framing my face, it was time for an overhaul. I was kind of excited to get the anti-aging facial, because after many rounds of #SpaWeekGossip, I learned it’s never too early to fend off lines and wrinkles. My facialist assured me that I needed this acne treatment. I needed to tend to the serious skin matters first, so it was on to the acne treatment.

It was the end of a long work day, so the first step of the process involved Donata cleansing my face with a clear solution that left my skin feeling lighter, and free of all the dirt and gunk that had settled in. Next, she positioned me under a steamer for about 10 minutes. This opened up all of my pores and prepped me for the rest of the treatment. I told her that the last time I had a facial was about six months ago and she recommended I get a facial every 2 weeks to clear up all of my acne. I wear makeup often, and can sometimes get a little lazy when it comes to properly cleansing and treating my skin, so I was kind of bummed to learn that all of my issues could have been prevented. The worst part, but probably the most beneficial were the extractions which took about 10 minutes. She squeezed the life out of every pimple on my face.

Finally, Donata placed a green mask all over my face which was soothing and smelled really minty. As the mask settled she gave me a relaxing neck massage. At this point I was nearly dozing off but wanted to keep picking her brain for ways to better care for my skin. Her first suggestion aside from regular facials, was to invest in better at-home beauty products. I have very difficult skin so everything in the drugstore wouldn’t work for me. She suggested Dermalogica, as they have several products made for people with acne. When the treatment wrapped my skin felt like new.

Donata, me, and my new face.... squeaky clean!

It was a great way to end a long day of work, my face cleansed while having all the tension in my neck and back massaged away. If you’re really looking for a one on one treatment experience and a great skin analysis I would definitely suggest this spa. Slope Suds also took a prize in Time Out New York Magazine’s Spa Week Superlatives for Best Age Defyer. Book the 60 Min Anti-Aging Regenerative Seaweed Facial Customized to Skin Type, 60 Min Deep Relaxation Hot Stone Massage, or check out the salon for Area Highlights — all $50 this week!

In the Big Apple, Green is Golden

Sure, New Yorkers are tough and aggressive (if you rode the 6 train every morning, you would be too!) But they’re also compassionate about the environment. From green city initiatives to individuals making conscious efforts to buy organic and local, it’s clear that when it comes to Earth matters, the Big Apple has a big heart.

Take for instance the The Green Spa & Wellness Center in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. They’re the first green spa in New York City and proud of it. And when I say green, I mean it. From their bamboo floors, to their energy efficient lighting, to the recycled denim that insulates their walls (not kidding), the Green Spa is doing their part. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle… Rejuvenate!

Starting March 16th you can make your Spa Week appointment at The Green Spa & Wellness Center on SpaWeek.com.
