4 Quick Ways to Save on Flowers for Your Wedding

For something that grows free in the ground outside, flowers can be stupidly expensive when it comes time to take them out of the ground and put them in your wedding. If you’ve got the wedding budget to drown your venue in heirloom roses and exquisite lilies, then you probably don’t need any help – but for the rest of us mortals who aren’t heiresses or members of a royal family, here are four super-simple ways to keep your flower power high and your flower budget low.

1. Stay away from February. Florists take notorious advantage of the rush for flowers on Valentine’s Day by hiking up the prices. If you really want to get married in February and you live in a cold climate, consider scaling back on your flower arrangements. If you live somewhere with mild or warm winters, consider going au naturale outside – greenery will be free!

2. Think seasonal! Forcing flowers to grow out-of-season takes lots of TLC – which can get expensive. Letting your florist know that you’d prefer to use seasonal flowers where possible can help cut down on the price tag.

3. Split the bill. Find out if another wedding party will be using your venue on the same day that you are. If there are two weddings booked, get in touch with the bride and see if you can coordinate your flower selection so each party can use the same flowers.

4.  Go for bulk. Check with your florist about renting large plants or even small trees/bushes to help fill in the edges around the venue and your reception location. Doing so can be significantly cheaper than filling in the space with floral arrangements, and will let you concentrate your floral budget where it’s most important, whether than be your bouquet, your reception tables, or an altar.

Wedding Wednesday: A Spoonful of Sugar

What if there were a magic pill to help you get gorgeous in time for your wedding day?

Well, there may not be any gorge-o-matic – but you can take a supplement that may get you pretty close.

One of The Wedding Channel’s bridal planning experts advises:

According to celebrity nutritionist Cindy Whitmarsh, you can’t go wrong if you start taking an Ultra Omega Oil supplement. This combination of fatty acids (including rice, soy, sunflower seed, wheat germ, lecithin, olive, pumpkin seed, and cod liver oil) contains vitamins like A, D, E, F, and K and is purported to improve your overall appearance, increase your stamina, and strengthen your immune system. Other possible health benefits include the elimination of fatty food cravings, the lubrication of joints, and extra nourishment for your brain cells. “This is the oil that I make all my clients take,” Whitmarsh says. “Your skin, nails, and hair will look more youthful, strong, and beautiful.”

Whitmarsh recommends that you take one spoonful a day at breakfast in the form of an orange juice shooter. Make sure you keep it refrigerated, she advises. The oil will go bad if kept at too low of a temperature.

5 Wedding Locations You Didn’t Know You Could Get Married At

Weddings in city hall or a church? No, thank you. You’re an adventurous bride, and you want your wedding ceremony to show your spirit – which means you certainly can’t get married somewhere typical. Luckily, we’ve got your back. Here are 5 unusual, super-secret wedding locations you probably didn’t know you could use for your wedding!

1. The London Eye

British Airways’ London Eye hovers high above the city to afford you breathtaking views and an unbeatably unique wedding day. You are married by a civil ceremony when you reach the top. Up to 20 guests can join you on your ascent and British Airways will provide a champagne toast to your new life on the way down!

2. The Great Wall of China

Get married somewhere where the scenery matches the limitless possibility of your future stretching before you by getting married on the roof of the Commune, a thatch of contemporary modern villas run by the Kempinski hotel group near the Great Wall of China.

3. The Zoo

While it may never have occurred to you to invite chimps and giraffes to your wedding, your local zoo can provide a fun and playful backdrop to your nuptials. Young and young-at-heart guests will love the after-hours peek at the critters! Your local zoo is almost certainly set up to host gatherings like this, so give them a call to discuss rates and dates.

4. A Cave

If you want a ceremony that’s completely private, consider a wedding in a cave – stay with us here. There are some gorgeous groupings of caverns in North America, and many allow you to exchange vows in their staggering, comtemplative natural setting. Check out wedding permit info for Carlsbad Caverns here.

5. A Sports Arena

If you or your intended is a sports fanatic, take your wedding over the top by hosting the ceremony or the reception on a local football field or in a ballpark. You can theme your food and drink appropriately, and toast to a home run marriage.

Wedding Wednesday: Tips for a Cheap and Gorgeous Beach Wedding

You wouldn’t think a wedding on the beach would be expensive – after all, you’ve got the perfect backdrop for your pictures, the ceremony, and the reception. And no one has to buy shoes!! But if you’re not careful, your carefree beach wedding could become an accounting nightmare. We’re all about easy ways to cut wedding budgets around here, so here are three big ways you can save equally big clams (GET IT?) for your seaside nuptials.

Go with the casual theme. A beach wedding inherently has a more informal, breezy vibe than a traditional church or country club wedding does. Take advantage of that to cut corners and save cash without giving up ambiance. Cute, homemade invitations will fit the theme perfectly, and you don’t need to spend money on flowers or decorations when you have the splendor of the ocean as your backdrop. Rent comfy chairs for your guests and opt for a pretty, gauzy canopy to get married under and you’re pretty much done where decorating is concerned.

Rent a beach house to save on hotel and reception costs. Instead of footing a big hotel bill for your wedding party, look into a beachside rental home – you can sleep there during the wedding weekend and you can host the reception inside once the ceremony is over. Have food catered, buffet-style, and supply drinks yourself. Pick a few easy-to-mix drinks that can be prepared ahead of time in large bowls or pitchers (try mojitos, Sea Breezes, or margaritas.) Or set up a champagne bar where guests can sample different types of bubbly. An enterprising DJ friend or an iPod can serve as your music!

Check permits. The easiest way to save money on a beach wedding is to make sure you’re not paying out the nose for the sand under your feet. Some beaches require lovebirds to purchase permits before they say “I do.” Your first move as an engaged couple planning a beach wedding should be to contact the municipality of your desired beach location to see if they charge for gettin’ hitched.
