Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk

As Breast Cancer Awareness month draws to a close, we wanted to thank everyone — from athletes to celebrities to marathon runners to people like you — who are supporting the cause.

There are things we all can do to help decrease our risk, and in honor of keeping the awareness movement going long after October, we’re sharing 10 of them, courtesy of the experts at the Mayo Clinic:

1. Limit Alcohol – If you choose to drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink per day. Greater alcohol consumption is linked to higher risks of breast cancer development.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight – Overweight women are at a higher risk for breast cancer. This is especially true if your weight gain occurs after menopause. Keeping your weight at a healthy level will limit your risk of many other diseases, too.

3. Exercise Regularly – The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week. If you need motivation and ideas, click here.

4. Use Lower Estrogen Birth Control – While newer studies don’t show a direct correlation between higher estrogen pills and breast cancer, prior research does. To be safe, ask your doctor if a lower estrogen pill can be as effective for you.

5. Avoid Air Pollution – Although further research is necessary, some studies suggest that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are found in vehicle exhaust and air pollution, can cause breast cancer.

6. Breast-Feed – Studies show that breast-feeding may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

7. Eat Healthy – Although eating fruits and vegetables doesn’t directly prevent breast cancer, it does help you maintain a healthy weight, and provide your body with healthy fiber and antioxidants, which can help stave off disease.

8. Avoid Long-Term Hormone Therapy – Hormone therapy in long-term doses can increase the risk of breast cancer. Always discuss your dosage options with your doctor to avoid taking more hormones than you need, for longer than you need.

9. Be Aware of Changes – If you detect any changes like lumps or skin alterations, make an appointment with your doctor immediately.

10. Get Mammograms – Don’t assume self exams are enough. Talk to your doctor about when you should start mammogram screening procedures, and make sure to schedule them as she suggests.

Spa Week Story Winner #2: The Big C and Time With Friends

Spa Week is over, but the memories and benefits are everlasting! One of the greatest rewards for us is hearing about how Spa Week has touched your lives. We asked for your Spa Week stories, and this is the week you get to read the 5 winners, who will all receive $50 Spa Week Gift Cards to use for their next spa treatment.

This one especially touched our hearts; sometimes it takes hardship to highlight the important things in life.

My friend Maureen and I visited LIFE SPA in Florham Park during Spa Week. Maureen is a 7 year breast cancer survivor who considers her cancer a “blessing.” It made her re-evaluate her life and choose the things most important to her, given the new lease on life. Spending time with friends is one of the things on the top of her list.

We were rubbed and scrubbed with massages and facials. We relaxed in the hot tub with waterfalls pounding on our shoulders, we steamed away leftover stress and cleared our heads in the eucalyptus steam room, and melted away the rest in the sauna. After using the wonderful locker room facilities we ended our day at the Life Cafe enjoying a delicious lunch.

Spa Week gives us a definite time frame to get together to relax and recharge in our hectic lives.

Think Pink: 10 Beauty Products to Shop for the Cure

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we want to do our little part to raise awareness. Many spas offer oncology massages to help breast cancer patients, among all the other ways 96% of spas are giving back. We’re also thrilled to partner with Stillwater Spa in Newport, RI for a second year for our Pink Martini Night. (If you are in the area, you’re invited!)

Women should do everything they can to prevent the disease because the facts are staggering: Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will lose their battle. You can show your support in various ways – such as helping Melissa’s mom raise $ for her Breast Cancer Walk – and also shopping for the cure. We’ve rounded up 10 great beauty products that are donating to the cause:

Aveda will donate $4 of purchases of their Lend A Hand Relief Hand Lotion during the month of October to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

AHAVA will make a donation to The National Breast Cancer Foundation with every purchase of their Hope Blossoms Mineral Bath Salts.

For each purchase of Clinique’s best-selling moisturizer, they’ll donate $10 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

diptyque is partnering with The Pink Agenda, non-profit organization, this Breast Cancer Awareness month and donating 20% of the proceeds from their Mini Pink Rose Candle to support in the fight against breast cancer.

Elizabeth Grant International is donating 20% of the online sales during the month of October from their highly coveted Light Up Your Lips in Sweet Pink to Breast Cancer Awareness programs.

Mama Mio will donate $1 to Look Good…Feel Better for every October purchase of Boob Tube Bust and Neck Firmer made on online . A breast self-exam instructional packet is included with each purchase.

O.P.I. has created the shatter version of their Pink of Hearts nail polish and will be donating $20,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation this month.

With each purchase of this Sonia Kashuk 6-piece makeup brush set, Target is donating 15% to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Tweezerman has created a limited edition of their best-selling slant tweezers and will donate a portion of the proceeds to organizations who are in search of a cure.

Philosophy will donate a 100% of the net proceeds of their Shower For The Cure shower gel.

Spa Glossary: Oncology Massage – Pink Ribbon Pride at the Spa

By Shelby Jones, ISPA

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner in October, many spas are helping to raise awareness and funds that benefit breast cancer research. (Read last night’s post on actionable ways YOU can help for BCA Month.) Known for their focus on healing and wellness, it’s no surprise that spas and spa product companies are offering special treatments, raising money and volunteering time for the cause.  Many spas around the country have therapists trained in oncology massage which adapts traditional massage techniques to safely provide relaxation and pain relief for cancer patients.

This type of massage focuses on helping the body heal. It can aid in reducing the symptoms of nausea, diarrhea, constipation, lack of appetite, insomnia and pain. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 230,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2011 alone. According to ISPA’s research, seventy percent of spa-goers are women, and almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by the disease.

The No. 1 reason people worldwide go to the spa is to reduce stress. Coping with cancer can put a tremendous amount of stress on patients and their loved ones. The spa industry provides a nurturing and relaxing environment for healing the mind, body and spirit.

Call your local spa and inquire about therapists who are trained in oncology massage. You can help the cause by visiting a spa that donates a portion of their proceeds to breast cancer research. Many spas will have special products in their retail areas from companies who donate proceeds to breast cancer awareness organizations in October.
