Gorgeous on a Dime: Botox Alternatives

Courtesy of Jenna Nicole Levine.

Over the years I have tried and failed at using dozens of beauty products (hot pink lipstick was not a good look for me). I’ve personally made cosmetic purchases that cost anywhere from .50 cents to $50 and occasionally the former proved more effective.  The truth is that even the most cost conscious consumer can get sucked in by a label like Chanel or Dior when the ingredients these expensive products are packing can be found in alternatives such as Olay and Dove.

My first stop on the beauty train is something the majority of women dread: Furrow Lines.

The true fix to furrow lines is unfortunately surgical; however many products boast the benefits of certain ingredients that will reduce the appearance of these lines. The number one go to for the reduction of furrow lines is the injectable goodness of that famous neurotoxic protein which temporarily paralyzes your facial muscles, otherwise known as Botox.

Now, I am all about Botox as a temporary solution to these unsightly lines, but one session alone could cost upwards of $500 (depending on the doctors per unit cost, which averages between $10-$20).  For today’s single working woman this is a steep and almost unaffordable price tag; the stress of which can only deepen those forehead elevens.

The low cost (and less painful) alternative can be found in the between the eyes patches Furlesse and Frownies.  Frownies (currently endorsed by Kris Jenner) claim to work the muscles underneath the skin by restoring its integrity, while Furlesse patches simply hold the skin in place while you sleep. Both of these low cost products actually correct the physical cause of elevens, and are hypoallergenic and latex free.

A one month supply of Furlesse will run you $12.95.  For 144 patches of Frownies the cost is $19.95.

Stay smooth and financially solvent!

Spa like a Celebrity Royal Wedding Guest

The official Royal Guest List has been released and people are going bloody bonkers. Have you been following the Royal Wedding? Do you feel like you’re stuck in a Westminster whirlwind of flowers, cakes, and dress obsessions? Relax! It’s time to schedule a soothing spa treatment. Take a spa cue from your favourite celebrity guests. Check out the list below to prep for the big day like a star!

Posh and Becks

David and Victoria Beckham have told friends they are ‘delighted’ to be invited. I cannot wait to see what Victoria wears. I hope it involves some sort of feathered headgear and a flash of baby bump.

Get Posh’s Glow: Airbrush Tan at Bronze Bombshell in Dallas, TX

Score Beck’s Shave: Straight Razor Shave with Hot Towels at The Shave of Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, CA

Thorpedo

Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe will be in attendance. Prince William met the Olympic swimmer in Australia in 2010. The Prince has since supported his charity, Ian Thorpe’s Fountain for Youth, which focuses on improving health and education for children.

Get smooth like the 6’5” Thorpedo: Full Body Wax at Completely Bare at The Hotel Palomar in Dallas, TX

Elton John and David Furnish

Sir Elton’s attendance to the royal event has been solidified even before the Concert for Diana and “Candle in the Wind.” With the addition of their first baby, we recommend some Daddy time at the spa before the nuptials.

Prep for Spec-tacular Eyewear like Elton: Electro-Stim Eye Lift at Perricone MD Flagship Facial Salon, New York, NY

Boyfriend Botox: 10 units of our favorite injectable at Skin Suite Rx in Chino, CA

Guy Ritchie

The director’s attendance to The Event has been confirmed. My bet — he’ll blow off some steam before the ceremony with some calorie-burning relaxation. He was married to rock-hard Madge for all those years. Google “Guy Ritchie, Shirtless.” You’ll be impressed.

Get Ritchie Ripped and Relaxed: Thai Yoga Massage at Erika Bloom Pilates Plus inNew York, NY

Joss Stone

What’s the sultry Brit’s connection to The Crown? She performed at a memorial concert held at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 1, 2007, in honor of what would have been the late Princess Diana’s 46th birthday.

Get Joss’ Beachy Blonde look: Full Head of Highlights at SashaG Salon & Spa in Wheeling, IL

Mr. Bean

AKA Rowan Atkinson is a “personal friend’ of the couple (according to the UK’s Telegraph). I know we are all thinking the same two words: Tarantula. Brows. He will be seeing The Queen, not to mention The Queen will see him. Royal Intervention, STAT!

Operation Uni-brow Elimination: Eyebrow Threading at Serenity Spa NY in New York, NY

Kanye West

Rumored guest/possible party crasher. According to the Daily Telegraph, Kanye is one of Prince William’s “favourite musicians.” Cranky Kanye needs a spa day so he won’t steal the spotlight, VMA style.

Botox: What does NY Fashion Week think?

Backstage at Jill Stuart. When the wrinkles come, what happens then?

For Spa Week this fall, like many times in the past, many of our spas are offering Botox. If you’ve familiarized yourself with our 12 top treatment trends list, the taboo beauty enhancement might have left you shocked, puzzled, or just thinking where does Botox fit in?

Beauty of the moment Kim Kardashian has admitted to and still uses Botox, and she’s far from alone. At NY Fashion Week this season, we asked some beauty experts and pretty faces what they thought on the subject, and the majority were overwhelmingly on board the Botox train.

At the ADAM Adam Lippes show, Celebrity Stylist Jorge Ramon expressed full support: “It’s preventative beauty. I’m all for it.”

Brazilian runway models Ani and Louisa backstage at the Jill Stuart show told us that when they start to see wrinkles, they’ll absolutely get Botox.

As for me personally, I got a Botox brow lift for the first time last season, and it’s now part of my beauty routine.

Celebrity Makeup Artist James Vincent, whose blush brush has graced the cheeks of Lady Gaga, Marc Jacobs’ models, American Idols and everyone in between, shared his more skeptical thoughts on Botox backstage of the eco-conscious Auralis runway show. My background is women’s studies and feminism, and I got started in makeup because I was writing a paper on women and beauty myths. So for me, I think Botox is a little strange. But as I get older, I can definitely understand the allure. If you really want to be feminist, if you really want to talk about women being individual, then a woman has a right to use Botox or not use Botox. I think that the danger for me comes in when we as a society say that age is not appropriate, and that as women age, they look wrong. For me, girls in their twenties are very pretty. But a woman in her 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, that’s when you really see a beautiful woman. That’s when someone’s life, and someone’s passion and the life they’ve lived come across. So I don’t think that I’d personally use Botox myself, but I understand why some people choose to do it.”

He then said: “What are my feelings on Botox? Go for it, just go for it! You know, if it gives you confidence, and makes you feel good, why not?”

The verdict still stands: to each his own, but if you’ve ever wanted to try Botox, now is the time. With Botox appointments as easy to attain as a mani/pedi, these spas make it simple to rid your wrinkles. Add the $50 price tag, we might all go a little Botox crazy. If you’re on board, here’s where to try it during Spa Week:

Top 12 Hottest Spa Treatment Trends for Fall 2010

Massages, facials, body scrubs… you can’t get enough! And that’s great. But did you know you’re barely scraping the spa surface? New technology, reinvented techniques and pop culture all shape the way we spa today. Here, Spa Week officially announces the definitive list of the latest in emerging spa treatment trends, from holistic to glamorous.

Treat yourself to a wellness and beauty adventure this Spa Week®, $50 spa treatments September 13-19 for the West Coast and Chicago, October 11-17 for the rest of the country. The Fall spa directory launches August 16 for the West Coast, September 13 for the rest of the country, when you’ll be able to see which spas are offering which services. Try one, try all— Spa Week is the time to indulge and experiment. All these treatments will be available for just $50!

1)      Fighting Allergies

allergy spa treatments

Sinus massages, breathe-easy facials and cold & flu bath salts are just a few of the spa services you’ll be seeing this upcoming Spa Week, just in time to soothe your seasonal allergies. Treat your immune system and clear your sinuses in the spa with new treatments using Eucaplyptus, humidifiers and Lymph drainage movements , to name just few of the techniques being used to assist in allergy relief.

2)      Bikini Glamour

Vajazzling made its sparkly splash last Spa Week, when bedazzling your bikini became the hot new standard in girly glamour. Other treatments are quickly emerging in its footsteps to pamper your private parts: Bikini/Bum Facials are being offered to give the same attention down there as a esthetician would to your face: toner, extractions and masks included. Also, post-Brazilian waxing rituals such as Airbrush painting and Vattooing are now the latest in vaginal adornment.

3)      Sleeping and Dreaming

Insomniac? A good night’s slumber with proper REM cycles can be just as rejuvenating as a spa treatment, so one of the hottest trends emerging in the industry is a dream-worthy mix of the two to promote better sleeping patterns. Scents such as Rosewood, Palmarosa and Vanilla are used to guide you off to never-never land while massage techniques make for a complete relaxation experience.

4)      Lash Extensions

eyelash extensions

Eyelash length, thickness, volume and darkness have gone way up on the beauty priority lists of women now more than ever. While new drugstore and professional lash volumizers continue to crowd the lash-enhancing market, the Fall Spa Week event is poised to give women more professional lash-extending options than ever before.

5)      Instant Inch Loss

skinny tummy

Remember that magical, completely safe instant weight-loss pill you always dreamed of? We’re not saying it’s been invented (sorry), but the spa is becoming a go-to place to get instant, (almost) magic-like results in addition to providing long term benefits. Colon Hydrotherapy is becoming more popular as a quick, easy cleanse, and hot new med-spa services like the 7E Treatment and Ionithermie give immediate results by targeting muscles with waveform technology.

6)      Reiki and Energy Work

reiki

Turn your trip to the spa into a journey for the soul. Reiki, energy work and holistic healing deliver health benefits ranging from injury recovery to spiritual growth. By engaging the flow of your “life force energy,” practitioners are turning spa-goers into active believers. Look for treatments with an energy component this coming Spa Week, and may the force be with you.

7)      Acupuncture

acupuncture

This ancient holistic healing technique is no newbie to the spa scene, but the granddaddy of healing is suddenly making a resurgence. The World Health Organization advocates the use of acupuncture to treat over 40 conditions, from anxiety and other stress syndromes to musculoskeletal pain and injury, and the Fall Spa Week event will encourage more spa-goers to forget their fears of needles and reap the benefits of this treatment—for their face, body and both.

8)      Botox on-the-go

botox injections

Pick up dry cleaning, get Botox, grab lunch… what? Yes, the age-defying treatment has become so mainstream that spas are now offering it hassle-free, and even appointment-free. Add the $50 Spa Week price tag, and suddenly “to-tox-or-not-to tox?” is one of the easiest decisions to make.

9)      Hot AND Cold Stone Massages

Spa Week’s favorite sweetheart treatment has always been the Hot Stone Massage, but the newest twist is cooler than past seasons. Instead of using all hot stones, this treatment includes the application of cold stones as well, adding multi-dimensional stimulation. Alternating the hot and cool stones helps every cell in the body receive more oxygen and nutrients and encourages a more effective removal of toxins.

10)   Champissage

scalp massage Also known as Indian head massage, Champissage has been practiced for more than 1000 years in India and has now been interpreted as a custom ritual at many spas. Traditionally, it began as a system of family grooming, with mothers massaging their daughters’ hair with oils to encourage long, lustrous locks. Over time, it began to incorporate massage of the face neck and shoulders, specifically yours this upcoming Spa Week.

11)   Everything Seaweed

seaweed wrapYou’d like to be… under the sea? Why? Just go to the spa. Seawater and seaweed have similar mineral contents with approximately the same percentage as the human body. Because of this, seaweed wraps help detoxify the body, eliminate excess fluids, increase blood circulation and regulate hormonal levels. More treatments than ever are incorporating Seaweed this Spa Week. Go for a dive.

12)   Simply… Oxygen

Human beings’ star life-sustaining molecule is getting more and more play inside the spa. One of the new treatments is Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy, which dissolves oxygen in the blood plasma and all body cells, tissues and fluids at up to 10 times normal concentration—high enough to sustain life with no blood at all. Oxygenating facials are also increasing in popularity, as oxygen continues to secure its reputation as the #1 skincare essential.

Experiment with these treatments and experience the true spa lifestyle for just $50 a piece during Spa Week. Make sure you’re signed up!
