Love Yourself! 5 Valentine’s Day Gift Picks by Shauna Mei

By Shauna Mei, Spa Week’s Intellectual Well Being Expert

While we are all spoiling our sweethearts on Valentine’s Day, I wanted to take a minute and remind everyone that the most important person you have to LOVE is yourself. Loving yourself results in drawing positive energy towards you and to those around you… by the law of attraction, the right kind of love will find you.  Take the time each day to feel beautiful. Here are some tips, along with my picks for the products and gadgets to make it happen.

1. Integrate meditation into your life every day.

Deepak Chopra Law of Attraction Button

You can easily practice The Law of Attraction with the help of our dear friend Deepak Chopra! Deepak taught me meditation and since I’ve been practicing, it’s truly improved my life.  AHAlife and Deepak created this innovative mp3 player in a compact button (that you can wear on your shirt) which you can listen to it for 30 minute per day and begin to practice The Law of Attraction!  Buy the button here.

2)   Kindness is always fashionable!

My dear friend Rachel Roy created the chicest clutch with a statement to live by. Projecting kindness and happiness is inviting it into your own life!  This is a great “love yourself and love the world” statement piece! Buy the clutch here.

3)   Glowing skin is the ultimate accessory.

My latest beauty obsession is the Crème Ancienne collection by Fresh. The one of a kind line was derived from an ancient formula used to healed gladiator wounds. The recipe has been re-worked with the help of monks in the Czech Republic who hand mix and bottle the delicate cream! Discover the story here; it doesn’t get better than this!

4) Have a picnic.

For the loved one in your life, create an experience that you’ll love too with Daniel Boulud’s exclusive Valentine’s Day picnic. It’s cold outside and what’s better than a lovely evening indoors and picnic by candlelight? Your picnic is here.

5) Simplify your communication.

We’re all bombarded with too much email and communication… why not give  your loved one and yourself a special phone dedicated solely to each other? That way you don’t have to screen any more calls, right? Leave the iPhone at home and set yourself free! I love this, the World’s Simplest Phone.

10 Titillating Classical Pieces + Shauna Mei Challenge Recap

Did you make friends with Johann, Wolfgang and Ludwig? Shauna Mei, Spa Week’s Intellectual Wellbeing Expert and CEO of AHALife.com, challenged our readers (and the Spa Week team) to listen to classical music for two weeks. The plus side: increase your IQ a few points. In 1993, Nature magazine published a study that proved your IQ actually increases by listening to classical music, which is known as the “Mozart Effect.” So how did it go?

I’m not entirely sure how much smarter I am after this challenge (haven’t taken an IQ test) but I definitely felt less stressed starting my day, and as a New Yorker that is something I so appreciate. Rather than waking up to a high-pitched shrilling alarm noise, I was greeted by the sounds of violins and pianos. I must confess that I wasn’t a big fan of classical music before this challenge. I thought it was just music they played in fancy opera houses and elevators. However, I have a new lease on life (and music)! I won’t be lip syncing to these tunes in the shower but they will be waking me up from now on, as much as possible at least. When you feel like life is moving too fast or you don’t have a moment to yourself, put on some classical music and I swear you’ll find your peace by the end of one song. It also makes me feel quite sophisticated. Shauna is definitely onto something here.

You can expand your spatial-temporal reasoning long after this challenge with some of the greats.

10 Titillating Classical Pieces

First, here are Shauna’s top 4 picks:

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 – Andante

Vanessa Mae’s rendition of Toccata & Fugue (especially at 1:38 sec)

Chopin Fantasie Impromptu Op 66

And here are some I enjoyed listening to:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass In B Minor

Ludwig Van Beethoven Symphony No. 3 in E flat major “Eroica”

George Frideric Handel’s Messiah

Johann Sebastian Bach Well-Tempered Clavier

Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida

Last but certainly not least, I’d like to announce the winners of the $50 Spa & Wellness Gift Cards by Spa Week (who shared their experiences on the event page):

Kimberly Y: “Each morning, I have faithfully listened to Bach and Mozart. I also enjoy the soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geish. The soundtrack is wonderful and very relaxing. I find myself breathing deeper and relaxing my shoulders when listening to classical music.”

Melissa C: “I have fulfilled my promise and have enjoyed it so much! A NEW RITUAL!!! I used to play the French Horn & was a music performance major but had health problems due to a car accident. I have been a licensed massage therapist for almost 14 years, & will be listening to more classical during treatments from now on.

Sincere thanks!!!!! ♥”

Congrats you two, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, and please contact michelle at spaweekmedia dot com within 3 business days to redeem your prize!

Trump Soho Spa Soiree + Win Hammam Treatments & Kate Somerville Skincare!

On the eve of Spa Week Spring 2011—the calm before the calmer—we were toasting to the upcoming week of $50 indulgences at one of our spa hotspots, the Spa at Trump SoHo in NYC, which just nabbed a coveted spot on the Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List for 2011.

Hosted by me on behalf of Spa Week and Shauna Mei, the founder of AHAlife, the intimate spa soiree was designed as a get-together for the curators of AHAlife.com, an eclectic group of influencers from around the world who choose the unique products featured in AHAlife’s gallery-like daily online store. Some of the guests included Home Cook Superstar Sarah Simmons, Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai, Armani US Retail Director Alessandro Valenti, and bloggers James Andrew, Kimmie Smith and Kristin Booker.  As a curator myself, it was great to bring together such a wonderfully diverse group of people.

The Spa at Trump SoHo, curated by Ivanka Trump, has been wildly embraced by the media, including a feature in VOGUE, and right here on Spa Week Daily. Read about Trump’s Turkish Hammam bathing ritual, one of the most traditional Hammam experiences in the US.

At the end of this post, enter to win that same Trump Hammam experience (2 winners), or a Kate Somerville Skincare Gift Set!

First check out the soiree highlights:

During Yamuna Foot Fitness, a little-known fitness trend, everyone learned the importance of stretching their feet, from heel to pinky toe. It helps with flexibility, circulation and strength. It’s especially great exercise for women who walk in high heels often, but also for people who walk, period. Learn more about it here.

The Spa at Trump refreshed each guests’ skin with an Oxygen Facial Blast with Mineral Veil, a quick mini-facial treatment.

Henna got super glam that evening—ladies loved the Henna Body Art with glitter and crystals, one of the upcoming treatments to look forward to at the Spa at Trump.

Foot soaks and shoulder massages in the Hammam setting gave guests a glimmer of the peaceful, other-world Hammam experience.

Guests mingling, sipping on wine and champagne, and enjoying the spread of meats, cheeses and crudite while indulging in the mini spa services.

Gaga was on. We couldn’t help ourselves!

NOW….ENTER TO WIN!

To win The Spa at Trump Hammam experience – ONLY ENTER if you are able to be in NYC for the treatment – (2 WINNERS)

Answer this question in the comments below: Why do YOU most want to experience a Turkish Hammam?

AND THE WINNERS ARE…

Winner #1 Someone who really needs some pampering… Jennifer SparI have experienced a rough year with some setbacks. I had lost my job and undergone a surgery. I am a spa enthusiast and love to try new spa treatments.”

Winner #2 Someone who we hope will report back and let us know! Deniz KustuBecause I am from Turkey and I need to test it to see if they are doing it properly:)”

To win A Kate Somerville Skincare Gift Set – (1 WINNER)

Answer this question in the comments below: What is the most important thing you learned about skin care in the past year?

Winner: Someone who made us smile with her truthful, simple logic: Linda Slayton: The most important thing I learned about skin care in the past year is that I really have to be friends with my skin. Skin is not the same for everyone. In order to decide what products are most beneficial, I need to really know what my skin likes and needs. Just like a good friendship requires work, so does my relationship with my skin. And a little pampering helps too!

You can enter both contests with two separate comments. Contests end Sunday, April 24th at midnight, EST. Please link your name to a valid email address or Facebook profile. Winner will be announced on this blog post and notified, and you must claim your prize within 48 hours.
