Foreign Brand to Know: Sulwhasoo

We love highlighting cool foreign beauty brands that you may not have heard of (check out our profile on Rouge Bunny Rouge). Today’s pick, Sulwhasoo, hails from Korea, and you’ll find it sold at some of the highest-end (and most discerning) retailers (think Bergdorf‘s and Neiman Marcus). They’re known for their powder shine compacts (see one above) with skin brightening ingredients and incredibly ornate packaging — and they change up the limited-edition designs year-round.

Aside from the powder compacts, which make incredible gifts, the skincare products are stellar — and you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on them. For novices to the brand, the Peel-Off Clarifying Mask, $39, is a good place to start. The Cleansing Oil, $36, is another pick you can’t go wrong with. It gently strips away surface impurities and makeup without stripping skin — and that’s why so many people become loyal to cleaning oils over creams, gels, and foams.

SPF Info for Melanoma Awareness Month

May is Melanoma Awareness Month – fittingly the same month as Memorial Day Weekend, summer’s unofficial kickoff. You know, the time of year when we really need to knock our sun protection skills up a notch.

As of 2013, new sunscreen labeling laws have taken effect. Not all SPF formulas are created equal, and some have even become a bit controversial. The only thing experts all agree on? You MUST wear it. Here’s what to look for on the label:

  • Broad Spectrum – This means that the sunscreen in question protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Which is what you need!
  • Water Resistant – You will no longer see words like “water proof” – because that’s just not true. Next to water resistant, there should also be a number – this is how many minutes you have until you need to reapply.

It’s time to start stocking up! Now, as for what type of formula to choose, there are two main categories of protection: chemical and physical. Chemical sunblocks use ingredients like Oxybenzone or Avobenzone to absorb UV rays, while physical sunscreens use ingredients like Zinc or Titanium Dioxide that form a physical barrier (hence that famous “white” appearance) thanks to tiny crystals that sit on the surface of skin to block the sun. Some people believe that chemical ingredients + the heat of the sun can be dangerous, but no concrete studies have been done. It’s up to you which product to choose, so here are a few of our favorites in both categories:

Supergoop!

Supergoop! Is paraben-free, water-resistant, moisturizing and lightweight. It won’t leave you shiny, thus making it perfect for everyday wear under makeup.

La Roche Posay Anthelios 50

Anthelios is an anti-aging primer with a serious dose of SPF to boot. Reduce fine lines and protect your skin from future damage all in one!

Rodan + Fields Anti-Age Age Shield Hand Balm SPF 30

Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30

When the weather heats up and we dust off those floral sundresses from last season: that’s when you know it’s time to start a whole-body SPF routine.

Cowshed Comes to the U.S.

The Cowshed brand began in a cow shed (literally) in an English country garden. Using botanical ingredients and herbal remedies, the founders created a line of aromatherapy-driven bath and body products that have gained an indie cult status here in the states (especially since the spas they were sold in could only be found in the UK). But now that’s changing…

Cowshed just brought its treatments and products to the spa in the Soho House, one of Manhattan’s most exclusive hotel hangouts (you may recall the Sex and the City episode where Samantha pretended to be a British Soho House member after finding her lost I.D. card). Aside from this spa, the only other place you can purchase the products is at Barneys (where else?). If you didn’t get the memo by now, here it is: This UK brand is as cool and exclusive as Kate Moss having dinner with Gwyneth Paltrow at Madonna’s flat.

So, why all the fuss? Well, for one thing, awesome products like exfoliating salt scrubs and stretch mark smoothing creams. For another, delicious herbal ingredients. The brand divides many of its products into 6 core aromatherapy blends, and each contains ingredients known to target various moods. Straight from the experts at Cowshed, here are the best essential oils for every mood-altering need (and what you can expect in each of the brand’s formulas below):

To relax: Knackered Cow Products
-eucaluptus and lavender

To elevate your mood: Moody Cow Products
-frankincense, linden blossom, rose geranium

To de-stress: Grumpy Cow Products
-grapefruit, petitgrain, mandarin

To get in the mood: Horny Cow Products
-rose absolute, patchouli, cinnamon

To get energized: Wild Cow Products
-rosemary, ginger lemongrass

To get better sleep: Lazy Cow Products
-jasmine, chamomile, sandalwood

DD Cream is Coming!

Just as CC Creams are starting to trickle out en masse to the market, an even newer skincare fad is now in the final phases of production – you guessed it, DD Cream.

DD stands for Dynamic Do-All. It was just a few months ago that we gave you this briefer on BB and CC creams – and jokingly predicted DD cream would be next. But it looks like we’re not so funny, and actually might be fortune tellers of the beauty world – because DD Cream IS in fact happening, as mentioned by She Finds last week.

In true Carrie Bradshaw fashion, this has got us thinking: How much longer can this trend continue? Are these products significantly different from one another, or is this just a ploy by the beauty industry to get us to keep upgrading?

Julep is the brand launching the first known version, and it boasts two different anti-aging ingredients. The purpose is not only instant coverage, but to improve skin over time, too. Just like BB and CC Cream, this formula promises lightweight coverage, SPF protection, perfect priming and moisturizing. Until we get some more details, it sounds pretty similar to BB and CC cream to us.

What do you think? Will you upgrade to a DD this summer?

Spa Week Test-Drive: Beautify Skin Care

When Beautify Skin Care signed on as the Exclusive Skin Care Sponsor for Spa Week’s Spring 2013 event, we sent the products out to some of our Hot Mom Spa Squad members to test. Naturally, everyone in the office was like, “When will we get to try these ridiculously luxe looking products?!” Well, that time has come! Three of us took home products, and we’re reporting back below:

Tester: Dina, Associate Director of Sales and Travel Marketing
Product: AgeDefy Moisturizer Crème
Results: “I’m 32 years old and praying I look 27, so when we got this in the office, I pounced on it. I’ve been using this rich moisturizer as part of my morning beauty routine for the past two weeks and am totally in love. My morning routine is a fast one, and I was excited to discover just how quickly this orange colored, citrusy-scented crème absorbed into my face so I could put on my make-up. The best part – my skin feels noticeably firmer and taught after each application. Taught = youthful, so 32’s not lookin’ so bad.”

Tester: Kaitlin, Senior Account Manager
Product: DermaSmooth Serum
Results: “I was never one to think serum was necessary in my beauty regime. Apparently I was wrong. This is super light (so it can be applied pre-moisturizer) and gives a nice velvety base for makeup. After a little over a week of use, I can see a difference! My skin feels a bit smoother and definitely more moisturized. It’s a keeper!”

Tester: Me! Spa Week Media Coordinator
Product: AgeDefy Eye Cream
Results: Having recently just turned 24 (December is recent, right? Wishful thinking?) I decided that it was high time that I jump on the anti-aging bandwagon, for preventative means. It can be difficult, however, because of my seriously sensitive skin. In the past (when I was the ripe old age of 23) I had tried anti-aging eye creams that included Retinol and they were extremely irritating (watery eyes for days, no fun!). When I saw that the Beautify line was more about natural ingredients, I was excited to give it a try, and it did not disappoint! The cream is luxurious to apply, and this tiny tub will last well over a year — all that’s needed is the tiniest drop.”
