Pre-Wedding Secrets for Glowing Skin

Our Director of Digital Marketing has brought us some amazing programs, like MyWellness Rewards. But she also really brings it in the advice department; having worked in the spa business for years, she’s picked up some very handy tricks.

In our office, Niki is known as the girl who had the most radiant wedding glow we’ve ever seen (evidence to the right). And lucky for us (especially me, since I’m getting married in two months!) she’s sharing all the tricks she did in preparation for her big day.

The secret? Microdermabrasion facials, followed by a glycolic peel, followed by Radiancy LHE Microphototherapy. “I did them once a month for about 3 months before the wedding and my skin was absolutely perfect,” says Niki.

Microdermabrasion refines skin at the surface, while glycolic peels help shed those dead/wrinkled layers and tighten pores. Finally, photo therapy helps regenerate cells for your freshest, most poreless appearance yet. Each of these procedures could cost as much as $150 alone, but here’s a way to save a little money: Book them during Spa Week and spend $150 total for all three– thanks to the $50 price tag on every spa treatment during the event.

There are tons of microdermabrasion, peel, and photo facial deals, so if you’ve got a big day coming up (or just want amazing skin) head to SpaWeek.com and search for a spa near you.

Sally Hershberger’s Wedding Hair Tips

Have you ever gone in for a trim and ended up getting a lot more hair cut off than you wanted? It certainly has happened to us. And while the unwanted growing-out period was frustrating, we always thought it could be worse — it could have happened right before our wedding.

Well, a few of us Spa Week staffers got engaged this year, and like so many women, our wedding beauty prep began with growing out our hair. Long, tousled waves work so well with wedding gowns, and long hair gives you more options for updos, too. Needless to say, the thought of anyone bringing scissors anywhere near our hair right now just gives us the shivers.

But there’s no reason to worry. Celebrity stylist Sally Hershberger shared some tips for brides-to-be (or anyone looking for longer, stronger hair in 2013). Here’s what to do to ensure that the period between now and your big day goes smoothly:

1. Start to use hair-strengthening products if you plan to grow yours out. Sally’s pick: Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray.

2. Book a wedding hairdresser at least 8 weeks before your big day. Bring a photo of your dress to the trial!

3. Leave at least a 2-week buffer between your last cut/color appointment and your wedding, in case you need to fix any mishaps.

4. Planning on an up-do? Don’t wash your hair the day-of. Wash it the day before, as freshly-conditioned hair is too clean/slick to hold a style securely.

5. Less is more when it comes to accessories. Don’t take away from a beautiful dress (and face!) with too much bling on your hair.

When to Get Pre-Wedding Beauty Treatments

First Blake Lively, now Anne Hathaway! It seems like Hollywood has wedding fever, and it got us thinking – What does it really take to prepare for the biggest day of your life? The treatment options are endless, but there are certainly a few essentials that every bride pays special interest to — and we went on a mission to figure out the best time to get them. This advice comes straight from the spa authorities:

Spray Tan

A dewy glow is a wedding day essential, but, “You don’t want to look too dark with a white gown,” advises Karen Nies from Facelogic – Morristown. Nies recommends coming in weeks prior to the big day, “In order to test out your treatment and see how the sugar cane-based tanner reacts with your skin.” Once you figure out your best shade, you can get your wedding tan two days before the ceremony.

Mani/Pedi

A manicure and pedicure is probably the most stress-free wedding day treatment of all, but remember that there will be a lot going on during your big day. Allie Wheeler, director of Exhale Spa – Back Bay in Boston suggests you get a mani/pedi as close to the wedding as possible. “A couple days before [is OK] as long as you avoid laborious work that could lead to chipping,” says Wheeler. As for the most popular nuptial nail polish color: “The French manicure is always a hit, It’s neutral and looks really polished.”

Facial

Although you’re sure to be glowing as you say “I Do” a facial is definitely crucial for flawless skin. This treatment is a bit risky, especially for sensitive skin that can have adverse reactions to certain ingredients. “Starting a series about 6 to 8 months before the wedding is a good idea,” says Kelly Richert, director of Mokara Spa in Colorado. She warns that brides often think it’s a good idea to get a facial treatment a few days before the big day, but you have to be very cautious when traveling down this avenue. “A mini facial or light exfoliator is good to get about a week prior for a radiant glow,” but she stresses that you give yourself time just in case.

Hair Cut and Color

Regardless of the hairstyle you choose for your wedding, you want your hair to look bright and healthy, which calls for a fresh cut and color. In order to ensure you aren’t walking down the aisle with orange hair, Lynn Marchi, supervisor of The Salon at Lord & Taylor – Manhasset, advises that you begin any new color treatments at least two months prior to make sure you have the correct shade. “Once you perfect the color, we can put you on a 4-6 week maintenance schedule for touch-ups, highlights and lowlights,” says Marchi. Finally, Marchi recommends you bring your veil in a month before the wedding to make sure your hair color compliments it.
