Mani Monday: Easy Watermelon Nail Art

This Manicure Monday we’re bringing you instructions for a DIY that you won’t be able to resist—watermelons, in just five steps!

final1

Watermelon Day is this coming Sunday, August 3rd, and we figured there could be no better way to get in the spirit than a festive summer manicure. This one may look complicated but it’s easier than you think to craft this cute DIY. Follow along below for instructions on how to get these nails that look (almost!) good enough to eat–in just five simple steps!

You will need five bottles of polish to create this design–pink for the base, white for the inner rind, green for the outer, black to paint the seeds, and a top coat to seal it all in! You will also need binder hole reinforcements and toothpicks.

1

Step 1: Paint nails one thick coat (or two, depending on the opacity of your polish) of pink.

2

Step 2: Use binder reinforcements to create an oval tip on your nails. Make this about 2.5x as thick as you would a French tip. Paint these area white. Let dry, and remove reinforcements (they may leave some sticky residue which you will have to peel off).

3

Step 3: Once the white is completely dry, place reinforcements again halfway up the white tips. Paint this area green, let dry, and remove reinforcements.

Step 4: Use a toothpick to dot on the black seeds. It is easiest to pour a bit of the polish out onto a napkin, dip in the toothpick and gently dab onto nails.

Step 5: Once all colors have dried completely (we’d recommend giving it a couple of hours so that the colors don’t run), seal your design with a top coat!

Juice for Better Skin

The safest route to naturally clear and glowing skin is through juicing—heed this advice from a top dermatologist.

Natural homemade fruit facial masks .

Juicing is all the rage these days, and we can’t say we haven’t hopped on board this bandwagon. We’ve already scouted out the best juice bars in NYC and shared the recipe for Stacy Stowers’ Happy Shake. This week, we chatted with renowned dermatologist, Dr. Ariel Ostad, on the beauty-boosting benefits of juicing for the skin.

Dr. Ostad says, “the best juice ingredients for clear, glowing skin include leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach, cucumber, celery and the veggie of the moment, kale. Adding beets for natural sugar and fresh lemons are great additions for the skin. These vegetables are not only great for your skin, but they also help with weight loss. Blueberries, green tea, and protein are also great ingredients for juices to add nutritional value that will allow for anti-aging and metabolism boosting benefits.”

Specifically, Dr. Ostad filled us in on the fact that green leafy veggies are high in antioxidants (a skincare superstar). Blueberries and green tea are also rife with skin-loving ingredients. Dr. Ostad shared with us the below recipe for his “Morning Mix” juice that will leave your skin healthy and glowing all day long!

Blueberries in a White Bowl

Dr. Ostad’s Morning Mix

Ingredients

  • 4 Crushed Ice Cubes
  • ½ cup Iced Green Tea
  • ½ cup Unsweetened Blue Berry Juice
  • ½ Frozen Unsweetened Acai’ Smoothie Pak
  • 1 cup Frozen Blueberries
  • 1 scoop Protein Powder

Directions

In a blender place crushed ice cubes, blueberry juice (enough to just cover the ice, approx. ½ cup), half a frozen Acai smoothie pak, and protein powder.  Blend until smooth.  Add the frozen blueberries and Green Tea.  Blend until smooth, pour and enjoy!

This recipe is only about 75 calories, low in natural sugar, and is loaded with antioxidants (Blueberries & Green Tea), anti-aging and metabolism boosting Acai’, and protein…making it the perfect way to start your day!

By now we’re sure you’ve heard about the health benefits of drinking wine in moderation, which makes pouring a glass after a long, hard day completely justifiable. But–did you know that, like fresh produce, wine is affected by the changing of seasons?

If this is news to you, don’t panic just yet because we already discovered the best red and white wines that are just right for summer! Our Summer Wine Guide has a little something to tickle everyone’s taste buds, and these beautiful bottles also make for great gifts. So whether you’re going to a BBQ or relaxing at the beach, make sure you have these wines on hand all summer long!

Vivanco BlancoRioja Vivanco

This colorless beverage is fruity and floral. Best served cold, this wine is just refreshing enough to enjoy on a hot summer afternoon or evening. Rioja recommends serving the Vivanco with fish, making it an ideal wine to pair with a light, seasonal meal!

Health benefit: Women’s Health reports that wine “improves the body’s response to insulin, which regulates blood sugar.”

St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc

This Napa Valley-created Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and invigorating.  Pale yellow in color, this sweet white wine is rich in fruity flavors like lychee and lemon zest. A fan favorite here at Spa Week HQ, St. Supery’s Sauvignon is the perfect way to relax on a hot summer day!

Health benefit: According to Food and Wine, moderate drinkers have a 50% less chance of suffering from a stroke.

Vina Bujanda TintoRioja Vina Bujanda

Although red wine is not typically associated with the summer, this pick from Rioja proves that stereotype wrong. Even though this wine is laden with the taste of dark fruits like cherries and plums, it has a less intense flavor than other red wines. It has a smooth finish and you’ll love drinking it with your dinner, year-round!

Health benefit: Reservatrol, found in red wine, boosts memory, according to Prevention.com.

10417613_700539250003563_3787796623626684992_nVanilla Puddin

This Gabrielle Union-endorsed spirits brand just launched earlier this year and is already making a splash in the marketplace. Perfect for summer, this delicious Chardonnay has notes of pear, light French oak and a taste of vanilla.  Bonus: This tasty beverage is served in a stand-out bottle that you will want to keep on your shelf long after the contents have been emptied!

Health benefit: It is believed that drinking wine lowers the risk of various cancers.

BANFI_bottle(1)Rosa Regale

If you love dessert wine, Rosa Regale will quickly become a staple in your wine cabinet. This sweet, sparkling red wine, fills a unique gap in the wine market. Made in Italy, bottles of Rosa Regale are best enjoyed when they are fresh, unlike most wines which need to age first.

Health benefit: Red wine lowers your risk of heart disease!
