Workout Wednesday: Get Trim with TAO

Introducing a new exercise device both compact and high-tech enough to allow you to workout anytime, anywhere.

What’s your number one excuse for not working out? No time? The gym is too expensive? You can’t fit the needed equipment into your 400 sq. ft. studio apartment? We feel ya, but April is officially on the outs, which means Memorial Day Weekend (the unofficial summer kickoff) is just a few weeks away. Luckily for those of us who can’t seem to drag ourselves out of bed to exercise (or stick with any of the above excuses–they work, too), TAO Wellness has created a new device ready to revolutionize your fitness routine.

TAO Wellness includes a handheld device, called the TAO WellShell, and an app which you can use on Android and iOS devices. The app is loaded with over 50 isometric exercises, which contract muscles in static positions.  The flexibility of only needing your TAO and your body to perform these motions allows you to work out on YOUR time, which is what we all really need.

Not only does TAO help tell you what to do, but the TAO WellShell monitors your fitness progression as well, even providing feedback. The sensors track heart-rate, sleep and pedometer steps. It also measures pressure, helping you vary your motions even in an isometric exercise.

TAO is an especially useful tool for video game lovers, because the device also works as a controller. TAO will really help you get into your game while providing a suitable core workout at the same time!

Confused? Check out this video and it makes the whole thing way easier to visualize:

Sound intriguing? We certainly think so! This device sounds like the perfect thing to bring on a trip, where it’s always so hard to stay focused on wellness, and a way for those who can’t (or won’t) work out any other way to get some training done at home. TAO was available on Kickstarter earlier this month, but for anyone who missed out, you’ll have to wait a bit to purchase your own device. Keep checking the website for updates!

Travel Tuesday: Midnight in Marrakesh

Traveling to Marrakesh? Here’s what to do and sights to see to make your Moroccan vacation unforgettable!

Of all of the exotic cities of Morocco, it is Marrakesh that draws the most tourists and not without reason. Between the winding souks, rooftop restaurants and locals armed with tricks straight from the circus, there’s no shortage of sights to be seen in this mesmerizing city behind walls.

Riad 2

Our visit to Marrakesh was all the more anticipated because it would be our first time staying at a riad – a traditional Moroccan home (more like palace!) with an interior courtyard garden, pictured above. Simply put, we were not disappointed. When we entered through the 12-foot tall ancient looking doors into Al Fassia, a luxurious riad featuring a stunning pool lined with a mosaic of aqua and teal tiles, we were in awe.

Pool 2

In fact, as we sat poolside enjoying fresh squeezed orange juice that put all others to shame, I’ll admit it was tempting not to forgo prior plans in favor of simply soaking up the divine relaxation. Yet, as Moroccans so frequently point out, Americans stick to their schedule! And so on we went to explore the famed Majorelle Gardens.

Majorelle 3

The stunning gardens that are home to the ashes of Yves Saint Laurent were simultaneously striking and serene. Intricate cactuses grew as tall as trees, and some stood isolated in a sea of sandy pebbles. Meanwhile, stunning blue and yellow tiled fountains and painted gazebos created an incredible vibrancy against the sharpness of the prickly plants.

Majorelle 2

After getting lost through the gardens we made our way to what one could only be described as the heart of Marrakesh, Jamaa el Fna, the city’s main square. With sunset fast approaching, the medina began to transform into a scene straight from Aladdin.

It was nearly impossible not to be seduced by the assault on the senses. Black-hooded cobras were hypnotized by their snake charmers’ calls. Monkeys posed for pictures on the shoulders of strangers. Henna tattoos were impeccably designed. And rhythmic drums echoed endlessly through the sea of it all.

Sunset 2

After soaking in the scene, we climbed the stairs of a nearby restaurant just in time to watch the sun dip down below the Atlas Mountains that sat in the distance. Hours later and thoroughly satisfied after a feast of Chicken Tagine and Cous Cous Royale, we set our sights on the sparkling square that looked absolutely irresistible at dark, lit only by lanterns.

It immediately became apparent that midnight in Marrakesh was, quite literally, a whole new world. Gone were the slithering snakes and monkeys milling about. Underneath the moonlight, the dazzling scene was saturated with sound. Circles of performers sat playing instruments, and easily moving with the music. The effect was as toxic as it was tremendous, and we were so fully entranced that we found ourselves forgetting where we were. Later, I realized that it was the magic of the moment that would continue to linger in memory.

Dangerous Beauty Products Exposed In Free App

The most dangerous chemicals in beauty products are being uncovered in a new app called Think Dirty.

Dangerous Beauty ProductsWhile organic diets have become increasingly common in the U.S. thanks to startling information about the dangers of chemicals and pesticides, consumers are still being exposed to toxins in an unlikely place.

That’s because many of us remain blindly unaware of the hidden dangers that lie within our beauty products. Think of it this way – our skin is the largest organ in the body, so what we put on it has a pretty widespread effect. And if we’re slathering up with harmful chemicals, some of which are even believed to cause cancer, than this poses a serious threat to our health and wellness.

This is what Lily Tse, a Toronto entrepreneur, was thinking when she came up with her new app called Think Dirty. With a breast cancer surviving mom, Tse quickly became aware of the potential dangers of beauty products. “I pay a lot of attention to food and a lot of other stuff, but then I realized that cosmetics and beauty are like a taboo,” she explained.

Tse’s new app breaks the silence on beauty products, however, providing consumers with an easy to use way of detecting unsafe ingredients. The free app not only gives information about almost 70,000 products from North America and Europe, but it also provides safer alternatives to products that are deemed high on the ‘Dirty Meter’.

While Tse’s invention will certainly serve to keep beauty consumers informed, another alternative is to commit to using organic products that are free of hazardous ingredients. Many spas have taken an oath to offer organic products during treatments, and some are even participating in Spa Week! Find one in a city near you, and book now before it’s too late!

There’s still time to book your Spa Week treatment – but not much! Head over to SpaWeek.com to find a treatment today!
