Expert Skin Q&A: How to Treat Adult Acne

You ask, we get answers! This week’s reader skin question is being fielded by Dr. Dendy Engelman, board certified dermatologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Q: How should I go about treating adult acne without drying out the rest of my face?

A: More and more adult women are coming to me with breakouts ranging from mild to severe acne. While hormonal fluctuations and stress can be a factor, there are a variety of options available to treat and prevent acne. I recommend choosing a cleanser that is gentle enough to address mature skin concerns, but also contains hard-working acne-fighting ingredients like 2% salicylic acid (I like Clearasil PerfectaWash Soothing Plant Extracts).

I also suggest using a treatment cream for individual flare-ups. If you use a prescription treatment, make sure to follow directions closely and do not over medicate – this can often lead to dry, flaky skin around the affected area. Not ready for a prescription regimen? In this case, I tell my patients to stick with an over-the-counter product they trust – like Clearasil Daily Clear Vanishing Acne Treatment Cream or a similar 10% benzoyl peroxide acne treatment.
