VIP has taken on a whole new meaning at London’s most famous department store. Up on the fourth floor at Harrods, clients are indulging in Full Body Massage, Blueberry & Vanilla Facials, Pedicures, Reiki Healing, Thalassotherapy Mud Baths, Deep Conditioning Treatments, Blowouts, Aromatherapy Bath & Body Massage, Weight Management and Nutrition Counseling. Many stay for a full indulgent spa day. These VIPs are… Very Important Pets.

That’s right. Dogs, cats, even tortoises are flocking (quite literally) to The Pet Spa at Harrods, Britain’s first animal spa. While owners go off to shop for Burberry and McQueen, they leave their four-legged friends in the hands of pet stylists and practitioners, acclaimed as the best in Britain, for one of 42 pet treatments offerings.

A frivolous lost cause, you say? Not quite – as we’ve reported here before, Pet Spas are nothing new here in America. The Rise of the S’paw Day is in full effect, Pet Reiki is quite popular, and Doggy Yoga is definitely a thing. It’s all because we see our pets physically and emotionally benefiting from the same spa therapies we humans love so much.

According to Stephanie Mehanna, The Pet Spa director, sure, they attract a lot of celebrities and the lavish locals, but it’s not just “bonkers billionaires” getting in on the Harrods Pet Spa craze. Treatments start at £59.95, ranging from £295 for a a full 4-hour spa day to grooming treatments with £15.95 add-ons like the Pet Pedicure or Oatmeal Healing Bath. Consumers are willing to dish it out for the pets, as regular old middle class pet citizens see the value in wellness and pampering.

If you’re perfectly content with your corner pet groomer, consider this: Do they have 101 Dalmatians, Beethoven and Hotel For Dogs playing on a loop on a flat-screen television? Their humdrum eat-sleep-poop life will never be the same again.
