Bergdorf’s Beautiful Non-Models: The Faces of 5F

New York’s Fifth Avenue windows are something of a sartorial climax. Each season, or in some cases each week, the sweeping windows along that famous avenue transform to represent the best new designers, the hottest trends, and, oftentimes, turn fashion into fantasy.

Well, that fantasy just got REALLY real for the eight new “Faces of 5F” – the young women who recently won Bergdorf Goodman’s non-model model competition. After a few rounds of competitive photo shoots, these gorgeous women were selected as the winning faces of 5F Fall ad campaign, will be featured in the pages of Lucky Magazine’s October issue, and are currently posing in a life-size photo behind what are arguably the most prestigious pieces of glass on all of Fifth Avenue.

Congratulations to the (oh so naturally!) beautiful winners, including my friend Natasha – how cute is she!? In the spirit of BG’s 5 Questions column that they do with their designers, I had 5 questions for Natasha, who runs a PR firm in NYC, about her journey becoming one of the faces of the iconic contemporary fifth floor shopping mecca.

Spa Week Daily: What was it like getting photographed for Lucky Magazine?
Natasha:
SURREAL. I am so used to be the one organizing a photo shoot, not being the one who is being dolled up!

Did you get to pick your outfit for the shoot? Who styled you?
I did not get to pick it. I ended up in a Rachel Zoe piece which I LOVED because it was the most girlie one. Plus the dress had subtle sparkles in it. I actually can’t remember who styled me, but she was SO fabulous.

Are you randomly hearing from people you haven’t heard from in years?
Absolutely! I didn’t realize I had so many “friends”

Hey PR girl, was one of the reasons you did this for PR for your PR company… and is it working?
I actually did it to try to have one more out of the box thing I have done in my life. I applied and never thought I would get this far and then BAM, there I am in the window at Bergdorfs!

And because we’re obviously obsessed with spa around here… what’s your all time favorite spa and spa treatment?
I really love Bliss Spa. They are really convenient for me, which is key. You can never go wrong with a swedish massage. I could go for one right now with all the stress of fashion week!

Meet all the lovely ladies below!

NATASHA
New York, NY
An enthusiastic fashion publicist, Natasha promotes start-up designers with her pr-savvy and genuine gusto.  Although she’s already completed four marathons (including Boston and New York), she hopes to soon become a triathlete.  When she’s not training, Natasha enjoys ballet classes… and playing a mean air guitar duet with her neighbor across the way.  Natasha’s New York City Secret? A Cambodian/Filipino dive in the Flatiron District (we’ll share it just as soon as we can find it).  You can follow Natasha’s tweets at @nhmediaprgirl.

MUTHONI
Doylestown, PA
In addition to hosting a radio show in Kenya, Muthoni runs a fashion blog called Fashion Beauty Insight where she shares her enthusiasm for western fashion with her friends in her native Nairobi.  She also shares organic skincare recipes on her YouTube Channel.  You can follow Muthoni on twitter at @gabrillemwangi.JUSTINE
New York, NY
Little sister to four older brothers, Justine cooly blends her southern Mississippi charm with tomboyish flair.  An account executive for Rag & Bone, Justine enjoys walking the Highline home from work and catching an aperitif in the West Village.  Her New York City Secret? one day she’d like to live in Brooklyn.

SHELLY
Overland Park, KS
Proud mother to aspiring jewelry designer and Parsons student, Brady, Shelly first shocked us in a sleek leather shift accessorized by her son’s designs; she later dazzled us when trying on one of the glittering samples for next week’s photo-shoot.  Shelly first hit our radar when Brady began posting about her on our Facebook Wall; of course it was Brady who encouraged her to enter… which didn’t surprise Shelly too much.  Style is in their family history: Brady’s grandmother was a model for Coco Chanel.AMY
Charleston, SC
Amy first shaved half of her head three years ago after being inspired by model and style icon, Alice Dellal.  Currently living in Charleston, she spends her days as a sales rep for Juicy Couture and free time working with the Art Institute of Charleston.  She also has a penchant for DIY: her necklace was made from a findings from an army surplus store. You can follow Amy on tumblr at The Style Blazer.

MEGHAN
New York, NY
Fresh off her flight from Paris (she rescheduled her ticket to make yesterday’s casting), Meghan left her job as a tech analyst to consult with start-ups; one day she hopes to help women build businesses in developing countries.  When not browsing downtown shops for vintage handbags, you may spot her in one of her sweet-serving New York City Secrets: Baby Cakes, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Dylan’s Candy Bar, David Burke Townhouse or the Vosges Barcelona Bar.

SARAH
Philadelphia, PA
Standing at just 5’3″, Sarah is our tiniest Face of 5F… which only confirms that height has nothing to do with style.  Already she’s a contributor to the popular fashion site, Style Salt, while maintaining her own Philadelphia street style blog, Style Nymph.BRIGID
Westchester, NY
The youngest of seven, Brigid shocked the judges when sharing that she once was a competitive Irish dancer.  When not studying textile development at FIT, she enjoys kayaking down the Hudson with her dad and baking.  Her New York City Secret?  Taxicab conversations.  You can follow Brigid on twitter at @bridiechillemi.

Irene Can’t Wash Away True Love

Rain, rain, go away. Don’t come back on my wedding day. Over the weekend, Hurricane Irene ruined so many things: from Freshman move-in day at NYU to The Dave Matthews Band Caravan festival on Governors Island. And now you can add true love to that list. Irene’s tyrannical rampage soaked-out weddings, stranded guests and forced bridal parties to head for higher ground… However, there were a few happy hopefuls that chose to weather the elements and continue their nuptials. I mean, hey, the show must go on, right? Take a look at some of the most adorably devastating wedding accounts of six almost-newlyweds from across the East Coast.
Bride-to-be Rona Geller reluctantly called off her Long Island, NY nuptials which were supposed to happen on Sunday. “It was the hardest decision I ever made,” said Geller. Geller initially tried to ignore the depressing weather updates, because she didn’t want to be “one of those panicked brides.” But eventually, she and fiancé Michael Field realized they had no choice in the matter—they now plan to wed on Oct. 16. Ironically, Field is the nephew of meteorologist Frank Field, and cousin to TV weather-watchers Storm Field and Allison Field. Also, Field’s brother, Joe, married wife Robyn during Hurricane Bertha, a Category 3 churner that hit Long Island in 1996.
Wedding Guests in Vermont weren’t so lucky. At least a dozen wedding guests were airlifted by helicopter from a Vermont town of Pittsfield on Tuesday where they had been stranded since Tropical Storm Irene hit two days earlier, turning rivers into roiling flood waters that washed away the only road in town.
A Rockland, MA bride has learned that she doesn’t need electricity for her big day — her new husband is the light of her life. Tropical Storm Irene forced their wedding venue to shut down, but that didn’t stop them from tying the knot by candlelight at a local tavern. That’s right — the bar saved the wedding!
Erica Sternin Weiss should be honeymooning in Tahiti right now. But because of Hurricane Irene, her wedding and honeymoon were cancelled. “I was supposed to get married on Saturday in a waterfront park in New Rochelle, N.Y. at 6:30 p.m.,” Weiss said. “On Friday night, our venue called and explained that the county was forcing them to close and our wedding was canceled.” So what did the couple do? Erica and Brett Weiss were married at their rehearsal dinner Friday night, right after they found out that their wedding venue would be closed due to Hurricane Irene.
A New Hampshire couple refused to let tropical storm Irene ruin their wedding and found a new location when authorities forced them to move the reception. Bill Luquette and Kyla Brown said they decided not to postpone their wedding when they heard Irene was expected to reach New Hampshire Sunday but they were left scrambling for a venue when the Windham Fire Department told them the reception they were planning at Searles Castle in Windham would not be safe during the storm, the New Hampshire Union-Leader reported Tuesday. The couple said they found a new location, the basement of St. Peter Church in Auburn, and the disc jockey, Mr. Jonathan DJ, was able to organize a reception with catering services in only 3 hours.
Hurricanes and Melissa Cook just don’t get along. Last August, she and her boyfriend, Jason Archbell, got engaged on a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina; the celebratory week at the beach was cut short when Hurricane Earl prompted mandatory evacuations. This August, the happy couple from Philadelphia made a return trip to welcome 150 guests to their wedding, planned for Saturday at Jennette’s Pier, a brand-new reception area perched atop the Atlantic Ocean. On Wednesday night, they learned from The Weather Channel that their plans had been scuttled yet again, this time by a blustery bully named Irene. “I saw the words ‘mandatory evacuation,’ and I just burst into tears,” says Cook, 29 and a civil engineer. “My thinking was because it happened this time last year, there’s no way it could happen again.” But it did. “I haven’t found someone to marry us quite yet,” says Cook. “But come hell or high water, I have said I will go on my honeymoon as a married woman.” (The honeymoon, to Aruba, was selected “very intentionally” because it’s outside the typical hurricane track.)

Men’s Hairstyle Showdown: Pompadour vs. Bald Man

The Showdown: Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, come one, come all to an epic hair-do showdown between two iconic men’s hair styles that are both making aggressive comebacks as we speak: the bird-esque Pompadour and the egg-ish Bald Head. With men’s spa treatments on the rise for Fall Spa Week, we’ve decided to take a look at these two trends in a head-to-head match-up. Hottest hair wins!

Pompadour: This 1950s trend gained popularity in the 1950s among rockabilly musicians and was made famous by music legend, Elvis. The bird-like coif sprouted up again atop John Travolta in “Grease” and Ralph Macchio in “The Outsiders.”

Who’s rocking the pomp now: “Grenade” crooner Bruno Mars channels his inner 50s grassroots jazz artist with a large hair flip that takes him from a measly 5’5” to an almost 6-foot stance. Rocking the fiery Pompadour is late-night Host Conan O’Brien, who’s ‘do is a part of the logo for his show on TBS. Flashy and flamboyant rocker, Adam Lambert has been known to sport the look along with gallons of eye liner and glitter.  Most recently, Lady Gaga’s alter ego, Jo Calderone showed up at the MTV VMAs with a greasy version as s/he sang, “You and I.”

Bald: In recent years, going bald has been a sign of premature aging and decreasing hotness. That is, until stars like Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan made going hairless a fashion statement. Now shaved melons are synonymous with mans-man celeb sex-symbols and hardened cop roles in tough-guy action flicks (and Britney Spears meltdowns).

Who’s clean shaven: Even though The Biebs rocked the baldness in February, Jake Gyllenhaal has followed suit, recently shaving his head for his new cop flick, “End of Watch.” Also going along with the movie role excuse: Joseph Gordon Levitt in the upcoming film “50/50,” Channing Tatum for “GI Joe 2: Cobra Strikes” and Matt Damon for his role in “Elysium.”

The Winner? In the end, whether your man sports the bare melon or the pouf, each look’s sexy factor is truly determined by the confidence of the man.

The Loser? While usually known for his deliciously dirty locks, Robert Pattinson definitely loses this hair battle royal as he was recently spotted with a combo of both trends atop his otherwise lovely cranium:

Sorry Rob.

Spa Glossary: Vichy Shower

By Shelby Jones, ISPA

Showers can be so boring. You lather, rinse, repeat… and repeat every single day. If you’re looking for the ultimate shower experience (and we know you are) then head to your local spa for a Vichy shower. This shower offers you a chance to relax through the healing element of water instead of rushing to get out of the door.

You might be surprised to learn you can actually get a decent massage from water jets, but it’s true. The Vichy shower is also used in many mud-related treatments since it’s a relaxing way to rinse off. The Kohler Waters Spa in Kohler, Wisconsin (participating in Spa Week this Fall) is an excellent example of a spa that’s made a name for itself by utilizing water elements in its treatments.

A Vichy shower treatment uses several water jets of varying temperatures and pressures that are applied while lying on a waterproof cushioned mat. It’s often followed by exfoliating treatments like a salt-glow scrub. And, just because it’s a shower doesn’t mean you have to be naked. A towel is draped over your lower body at all times, and your therapist will never compromise your modesty.

Deep Sea Spa-ing, including Vichy Showers, is one of Spa Week’s top 10 treatment trends for Fall 2011.

If you want to learn more about different spa treatments visit ISPA’s spa glossaryat experienceispa.com.

Shelby Jones is based in Lexington, KY at the ISPA headquarters, Spa Week’s exclusive trade partner. She has worked as ISPA’s Public Relations Manager for five years where she connects with top media outlets to promote ISPA members and the spa lifestyle. To get in touch with Shelby please email her or follow @ISPADoYou on Twitter. If you’re in the spa industry, we encourage you to become a member of ISPA; weekly e-mails with pointers like these are just one small part of the package to help you succeed!
