We’ve all heard that a glass of red wine a day is good for cardio health, but recent studies show beer and spirits may also have the same effects.
A fall study in the British Medical Journal indicated that moderate alcohol intake (one drink daily for women and two daily for men) resulted in lower risk of heart disease and healthy cholesterol levels.
“Alcohol can be part of a healthy diet,” says Dr. Monica Gourevitch, senior vice president of the Office of Scientific Affairs at the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. “People who drink moderately versus people who don’t drink at all have better heart health and live longer.” (Not as healthy as Spa Happy Hour, of course.)
And contrary to popular belief, moderate alcohol consumption helps to stymie weight gain over time, particularly in females.
Nearly 19,220 healthy women over the age of 39 were examined over 13 years in a study released this spring in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Those who didn’t drink gained about 8 pounds while women who drank about 12 ounces of alcohol daily gained about 3 pounds with a lower obesity risk.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you should overindulge. Those who drank heavily in both studies experienced opposite, detrimental effects. Regular exercise and a balanced diet is key to a healthy lifestyle.
“Know your limits,” Dr. Gourevitch says.
