Belli Up

Pregnant and worried about taking your newly-sized belly out into the hot sun? You have every right to feel this way–your hormones are changing, and weight gain can be incredibly frustrating.

With Belli’s skincare line, designed to address issues specific to pregnant women, new mothers can revitalize their skin, reduce signs of aging, and above all, enjoy the warm season.

“By exfoliating your skin two to three times per week you are unclogging your pores, sloughing away dead skin cells, and revealing the fresher, healthier skin underneath,” says Annette Rubin a mother and Founder of Belli.

Which Witch?

Yesterday I asked our Facebook friends what their top 5 beauty/skincare must-haves were, and a few people responded with witch hazel. This prompted Adrienne T. to ask:

What’s with all the Witch Hazel? Am I missing something?

Witch hazel is an extract made from the bark and leaves of the Hamamelis virginiana shrub. It’s been used for many years as an astringent to clean the face, treat bruises, skin problems, and even more serious injuries. It’s usually used topically (although some forms can be ingested) to treat nicks and cuts, and some eye drops even contain the herb as it’s been known to help treat eye infections.

The Beauty Brains uncovers its astringent properties and says, “It’s rich in tannins, which in theory can cause a mild coagulation of skin proteins. This coagulation can dry, harden, and protect the skin.”

Here are a few common products containing the herb:

Burt’s Bees Aloe & Witch Hazel Hand Sanitizer Spray
Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Pads
Aveda Witch Hazel Hair Spray

Watch Where You Stretch

I always head to the stretching area after any workout at the gym. Although I know how thick the bacterial gunk is on those yoga mats, I tell myself that if I lay down a towel (also supplied to me by the gym), and spray it a few times with whatever alcohol-based spray they keep in those spritzers, that I’m doing enough.

But just how icky are those mats? Well according to the Daily Mail there is–wait for it– 100,000 bacteria per square centimeter! Now think about all those barefoot downward dogs you did! Here are a few cleansers you might want to suggest to your gym if you HAVE to use communal mats.

Lash Of The Titans

When Viktor & Rolf’s collaborated with beauty behemoth Shu Uemura everyone went mad for their crazy false lashes. As picturesque as they are, the price point is high–averaging about $95 a pair.

It was only a matter of time before knock-off emporium Forever 21 made a set of its own. I haven’t tried them, and I question the quality of the product (like I do with everything they produce). But lashes are meant to be playful, and I can’t imagine anyone rallying to wear these dramatic falsies more than a few times anyway.
